Redskins Select Safety Troy Apke

The Redskins have added a second defensive player in the 2018 NFL Draft with the selection of safety Troy Apke, who played four seasons at Penn State.

For the second year in a row, the Washington Redskins have selected a safety out of the Big Ten in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Redskins on Saturday selected Penn State's Troy Apke with the No. 109-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Apke joins the Redskins after spending four seasons at Penn State, appearing in 44 games to collect 111 tackles along with six passes defensed, two interceptions, one fumble forced and one fumble recovered.

During his senior season in 2017, Apke earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as he set career highs in total tackles (55), solo tackles (36) and passes defensed (five).

According to his Penn State bio, the 6-foot-1, 200 pounder also earned the Ridge Riley Memorial Award at the annual team banquet, sharing the award which represents "sportsmanship, scholarship, leadership and friendship."

As a junior, Apke appeared in 14 games to record 28 tackles along with five special teams stops.

In his first two seasons with the Nittany Lions, the safety played in a combined 17 games to register 28 tackles.

With his addition to the roster, Apke joins the likes of Montae Nicholson, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, along with D.J. Swearinger among others.
