LANDOVER, Md. -- The Washington Redskins picked up their second win of the season Sunday by way of a 39-yard field goal from Dustin Hopkins in the final seconds.

Hopkins tied the game minutes earlier with a 42-yard field goal, and on the ensuing defensive possession Quinton Dunbar made his team-leading fourth interception of the season to set the Redskins up near midfield.

Then came a 11-yard scramble from rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins and a crucial 17-yard connection to Terry McLaurin that moved the Redskins well into field goal range. The offense then gave way to Hopkins, whose fourth field goal of the game secured the team's second win this season and its first home victory since Oct. 21, 2018.

Haskins completed just 13 of his 29 passes for 156 yards in his first-career win, but several of those completions came after the Lions took the lead with a short field goal with about 12 minutes to play. Following an interception and a punt, Haskins spearheaded a nine-play, 54-yard drive that ended in Hopkins' 42-yard field goal. On the next offensive possession, the Redskins went 33 yards in six plays before the game-winning kick.

The game was a series of ups and downs for the Redskins (2-9 overall), who started fast but were stymied for much of the second half.

The high point in the first half came with 5 minutes, 38 seconds to play in the second quarter, when a 37-yard field goal from Hopkins pushed the Redskins' lead to 13-3. The team's offense had struggled up to that point, but its performance on defense and special teams made up for these woes.

Washington stripped running back Bo Scarbrough and intercepted backup quarterback Jeff Driskel. And after Detroit connected on its first field goal, Steven Sims Jr. put the Redskins back ahead with an electric 91-yard kickoff return. Hopkins' conversion extended their advantage to double digits.

But from that point on, Detroit dominated defensively and ran the ball well enough to score 13 unanswered points. The struggles fell largely on the shoulders of the Redskins' offense, which entered the game as the NFL's worst scoring offense with an average of 12.5 points per game. The unit managed 230 total yards against a poor Lions defense, picked up 13 first downs and went 4-for-14 (29%) on third downs.

The Redskins defense turned over Detroit twice in the first half, but they struggled to contain the Lions' run game for much of the final two quarters and gave up 364 yards overall. Scarbrough, who the Lions activated from the practice squad Nov. 6, rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries while Driskel, filling in for injured starter Matt Stafford, threw for 207 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

Cornerback Fabian Moreau, starting in place of Josh Norman, made the Redskins' first interception in the second quarter and then sealed the game with the team's third interception in the final seconds.
