The Washington Redskins will begin their offseason training program on April 15 with two weeks of weight training activities before transitioning to on-field training the first week of May.
The National Football League on Monday announced the offseason workout schedules for all 32 teams, and many members of the Washington Redskins will be returning to the Inova Sports Performance Center at Redskins Park in Loudoun County, Va., in just less than two weeks, on April 15.
"From the end of the season until April 15, we’re planning for the offseason program," head strength and conditioning coach Chad Englehart said. "We’re planning for training camp, we’re planning for the season. It’s fun, it’s a fun ride, we’ll see what happens.”
The Redskins will begin their offseason training with two weeks of Phase 1 workouts. During this period, players are limited to just strength and conditioning workouts along with physical rehabilitation.
After Phase 1 workouts have been completed, the team transition to on-field work during Phase 2, which consists of three weeks of on-field workouts that may including player instruction and drills along with team practices that can be conducted on a “separate” basis.
Finally, Phase 3 workouts will take place over May and June prior to the players departing for their final time away before training camp. While the players will be on the field, no live contact is permitted during this phase, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.
The Redskins will host their three weeks of OTAs on the following days:
- May 20-21, 23
- May 28-30
- June 10-12
The Redskins will also hold their annual rookie minicamp for players selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, college free agent signings and other invites from May 10-12 at the team’s headquarters. Finally, mandatory minicamp will take place from June 4-6.
“Obviously every year we bring something new to Redskins Park," Englehart said. "We always try to get on the cutting edge of new technology, whether it’s technology or equipment, but there’s going to be new things here. Whether it’s a new schedule, there’s a lot of things that go into it, it’s not just ‘hey I want to lift, dude.’ It’s a lot of things that go into it. The way you’re doing things, the guys you have here, the personnel. All of that, the new CBA rules, you’ve got four hours in the building for Phase 1 and Phase 2. The size of the weight room, how long you’re on the field, all that goes in."
