2016 NFL Combine Comparables With Redskins

With the 2016 NFL Combine in the books, Redskins.com looks at some of this year's participants and stacks them up against the performances of current Redskins.

As NFL personnel, scouts and even fans dissect the performances of all of the NFL Combine participants, Redskins.com looks at how they were similar to those of current Redskins.

While these reflections are based on their Combine performances only, they do not indicate potentially similar NFL paths.

Quarterback

With the 2016 NFL Combine underway, Redskins.com will look back at past Redskins that attended the event. Here's photos of Kirk Cousins.

Kirk Cousins
--6-3, 214 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.93 seconds
--Vertical jump: 28.5"
--Broad jump: 109"
--Three-cone: 7.05

Cody Kessler
--6-1, 220 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.89 seconds
--Vertical jump: 29.5"
--Broad jump: 104"
--Three-cone: 7.32

The easy comparison would be Cousins and fellow Michigan State Spartan Connor Cook. But the reality is that Cook is a little bit bigger and a little bit more athletic than Cousins.

In three seasons as Michigan State's starting quarterback, Cousins threw for 64 touchdowns and 8,821 yards. In the same amount of time with the USC Trojans, Kessler threw for 10.339 yards and 88 touchdowns.

Running Back

With the 2016 NFL Combine underway, Redskins.com will look back at past Redskins that attended the event. Here's photos of Matt Jones.

Matt Jones
--6-2, 231 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.61 seconds
--Vertical jump: 31.5"
--Broad jump: 112"
--20-yard shuffle: 4.20

Here's a gallery from the running back workouts that took place at the 2016 NFL Combine (AP).

Brandon Wilds
--6-1, 220 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.54 seconds
--Vertical jump: 36.5"
--Broad jump: 118"
--Three-cone: 6.95
--20-yard shuffle: 4.14

It's difficult finding a comparison for Jones due to the fact he's easily one of the biggest running backs in the NFL, but Wilds has a somewhat similar background to the 2015 third-round pick.

Like Jones, Wilds dealt with injuries throughout his college career but flashed potential against SEC defenses as he ran for at least 100 yards in three different games against conference competition as a senior.

Wide Receiver

With the 2016 NFL Combine underway, Redskins.com will look back at past Redskins that attended the event. Here's photos of Jamison Crowder.

Jamison Crowder--5-8, 185 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.56 seconds
--Broad jump: 115"
--Three-cone: 7.17
--20-yard shuffle: 4.32

Bralon Addison
--5-9, 197 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.66 seconds
--Broad jump: 116"
--Three-cone: 6.95
--20-yard shuffle: 4.14

Giving some love to the little guys of the group.

After an incredibly productive career as both a receiver and as a returner during his career at Duke, Crowder entered the NFL Draft last year as one of the smallest wide receivers in the class but ended up being one of the most useful players as a rookie.

Addison hopes to have similar success at the next level after three seasons at Oregon where he totaled 1,937 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns along with three punt return touchdowns.

Offensive Lineman

With the 2015 NFL Combine set to start this week, Redskins.com will look back at past Redskins that attended. Today, it's Morgan Moses.

Morgan Moses
--6-6, 314 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 5.35 seconds
--Broad jump: 113"
--Three-cone: 7.93
--20-yard shuffle: 4.95

Willie Beavers
--6-4, 324 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 5.28 seconds
--Broad jump: 103"
--Three-cone: 7.96
--20-yard shuffle: 4.71

Neither Moses or Beavers were considered the best offensive linemen of their year, but both have the size and skill needed to succeed at the NFL.

After being selected by the Redskins in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Moses had essentially a redshirt season as a rookie before becoming a full-time starter at right tackle in 2016 -- and a strong one at that.

Defensive Lineman

Check out images of veteran defensive end Jason Hatcher during the 2015 offseason.

Jason Hatcher
--6-6, 284 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.82 seconds
--Bench press: 28 reps
--Vertical jump: 35.5"
--Broad jump: 113"

Robert Nkemdiche
--6-3, 294 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.87 seconds
--Bench press: 28 reps
--Vertical jump: 35"
--Broad jump: 116"

Redskins fans may know Hatcher as the wily veteran along the defensive line, but in 2006 Hatcher had one of the best workouts among NFL Combine participants.

From Grambling State, Hatcher – who was at one point a tight end – ended up being taken in the third round that year at No. 92 overall.

In 11 seasons, Hatcher has accumulated 250 tackles with 34.5 sacks and five forced fumbles.

For Nkemdiche, there's no denying his athleticism as evident during Saturday's workout.

But after a December hotel incident, there are some concerns about his off-field issues. If he can correct those, he could be a big-time player from this draft.

Pass Rusher

With the 2016 NFL Combine underway, Redskins.com will look back at past Redskins that attended the event. Here's photos of Preston Smith.

Preston Smith
--6-5, 271 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.74 seconds
--Bench press: 24 reps
--Vertical jump: 34"
--Broad jump: 121"
--Three-cone: 7.07 seconds

Noah Spence
--6-2, 251 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.80 seconds
--Bench press: 25 reps
--Vertical jump:  35"
--Broad jump: 121"
--Three-cone: 7.21 seconds

Both Smith and Spence can likely play both defensive end and outside linebacker depending on which defensive scheme they are in.

Last season, Smith started to impress in the NFL Draft process when he recorded five tackles and a sack in the 2015 Senior Bowl.

This year, it was Spence who stood out among his peers in Mobile, Ala., as he recorded two tackles and a sack while showing the credentials of being a potential pass rushing threat at the next level.

While most thought Spence was in line to run the 40-yard dash at a quicker speed, he'll get a chance to improve on his marks this Friday at Eastern Kentucky's Pro Day.

Inside Linebacker

With the 2016 NFL Combine underway, Redskins.com will look back at past Redskins that attended the event. Here's photos of Mason Foster.

Mason Foster
--6-1, 245 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.75 seconds
--Bench press: 22 reps
--Vertical jump: 31"
--Broad jump: 110"
--20-yard shuffle: 4.45 seconds

Scooby Wright III
--6-0, 239 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.90 seconds
--Bench press: 22 reps
--Vertical jump: 31"
--Broad jump: 113"
--Three-cone: 4.47 seconds

Neither player was the standout from their year's group of linebacker workouts, but both were incredibly productive players while in college and have that "natural instinct" that is looked for in inside linebackers.

In four seasons the University of Washington, Foster totaled 378 tackles and was an Associated Press third-team All-American along with an All-Pac-10 selection.

Wright III, meanwhile, recorded 246 tackles in two seasons while earning the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award during his junior season.

Defensive Back

Check out images of veteran safety Dashon Goldson during his first few months with the Washington Redskins.

Dashon Goldson
--6-2, 205 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.60 seconds
--Bench press: 12 reps
--Vertical jump: 34.5"
--Broad jump: 115"
--Three-cone: 7.37 seconds

Darian Thompson
--6-2, 208 lbs.
--40-yard dash: 4.69 seconds
--Bench press: 12 reps
--Vertical jump: 32.5"
--Broad jump: 118"
--Three-cone: 7.26 seconds

Thompson's stock may have dipped a little bit following his Combine performance, but he's still projected as one of the top safeties in this year's draft like Goldson was back in 2007.

Goldson started his college career at cornerback before moving to safety before his senior season in 2006, when he totaled 50 tackles with 11 passes defensed and an interception.

The current Redskins safety was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft and has twice been selected as a Pro Bowler.

Thompson was an Associated Press All-American third-team selection in 2015, as the Boise State safety recorded 65 tackles with five interceptions.
