Five Faves Of '17: Redskins Instagrams

Posted Jan 3, 2018

The Redskins had a lot of stuff to remember in 2017. Here are some of our favorite Redskins Instagrams from the year.

The Redskins had a lot of stuff to remember in 2017.

Now that the season has come to a close, the Redskins Blog will select its favorite things from Redskins fans, players, coaches and team personnel over the last 12 months.

We’ll continue with our five favorite Redskins Instagrams.

1. The Fighter

This is more about the story. Isaiah Shorter, currently battling a unique and advanced form of brain cancer, had brought a sign made by a friend to the Redskins-Cardinals game. The message, “Fighting chemo, but can’t keep me from my team,” caught the attention of FedExField staff, and Shorter was soon given the chance of a lifetime. Linebacker Martrell Spaight autographed his sign and the next day made a trip to Pennsylvania to meet with him and his family.

2. The Sean Taylor Stories

As mentioned in Tuesday’s blog about the five favorite tweets of the year, understandably, the tenth anniversary of Sean Taylor’s passing makes the list here, too. Using the stories compiled in a longform article, the multiple photos share some of the unique sides to Taylor as recalled by his former teammates and friends. If you haven’t read these yet, do yourself a favor.

3. The Turkey Legs

The Redskins made playing on Thanksgiving not all that bad after defeating the New York Giants and then getting an NBC-provided meal to celebrate. After waiting all day to eat turkey, the victory provided several players a nice appetizer during the postgame interview session. Kirk Cousins helped feed his offensive linemen and safety D.J. Swearinger, a noted pescetarian, held up the turkey leg but never took a bite. That’s discipline.

4. The Proud Father

One of the intriguing off-field storylines earlier this year was the arrival of Cooper Cousins, Kirk’s firstborn that came right before the Bye Week. It was, in some ways, perfect timing for the Cousins family, as Kirk had the opportunity to be an attentive father during the first week of his child’s life. Many more shirtless pics and “dad swag” photo ops would be in store, but this shot with Kirk’s dog, Bentley, decked in a Redskins bandana, takes the cake.

5. The Dale Jr. Out-Route

After a day at the Richmond Raceway, Dale Earnhardt Jr., noted Redskins enthusiast and now retired NASCAR driver, got out of the car and onto the football field at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center. Then he got his dream experience. After practice, he lined up beside Kirk Cousins and ran a few routes while cornerback Josh Norman defended him. He doesn’t have a great plant foot, but Earnhardt at least has some hands.
