Terence Garvin had a major impact defensively in the final preseason games and hopes that overall body of work is enough to make the Redskins' final roster.

Terence Garvin made a strong case for his inclusion on the Redskins' 53-man roster, highlighted by his play Wednesday night.

Garvin had five solo tackles against Tampa Bay.

While he has continued to make his presence felt on special teams, an area he has thrived in throughout his career, more importantly Garvin saw significant time on defense in the game. The extra snaps gave him an opportunity to show off his all-around game.

"I feel like I can play defense also. I feel like I'm a linebacker that plays special teams. Not so much a special teamer that just plays linebacker, I'm a linebacker also," Garvin said. "It felt good to be out there, fly around and make some plays."

If Garvin, with this performance, can make it through the final cuts, this will be his first regular season with the Redskins. The fourth-year veteran and native of Upper Marlboro, Md., was with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the first three seasons of his career. Garvin had gone undrafted out of West Virginia in 2013.

While he has only started one game at linebacker in his career, Garvin has been a major contributor on special teams. He amassed 33 special teams tackles in Pittsburgh, a team-best for the Steelers during that time.

After joining the Redskins in March, Garvin has shown how helpful he can be on special teams. But he has also shown what he can do at linebacker. He has 15 total tackles this preseason, 10 solo and five assisted tackles, third on the team. He also has a fumble recovery.

The ability to play both is something that Garvin thinks can help him in the long run.

"It's very important to be versatile," Garvin said. "It's who you are and it shows your game. I came here, trying to show people I can be a linebacker also. I can play football. I like to play special teams, that's a big part of the game. I just try to be a four-down linebacker and that's what I tried to show."

For players like Garvin, the goal Wednesday night, despite all the conditions and changes that the team dealt with, was to make a good impression to increase their chances of making the team, which overall, the players did.

"It was wet but I think our guys were really into the game. They know what's at stake and they showed what they're all about," Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said. "It's not easy for them competing but they all came out. Defensive line, linebackers were flying around, safeties made some big plays."

The players hope that they have shown as much consistency and improvement as possible over the course of the whole preseason as well.

"I feel like it was a good camp," Garvin said. "I feel like we came out here, I feel like we did what we were trying to do. We got better. We learned the defense, we learned the plays. As far as tonight, it was a fun game. It was wet, so we were just out here kind of flying around trying to do what we had to do."

All that's left to do now is wait.

"I feel like I worked hard.  I feel like I had a good preseason," Garvin said. "I think it's going to go [well]. I'm going to relax, just see what happens, and go from there."
