Redskins Sign Offensive Lineman Tony Bergstrom

With numerous offensive linemen dealing with injuries, the Redskins have signed offensive linemen Tony Bergstrom. He's appeared in 44 games over his six-year career.

The Washington Redskins announced on Wednesday that they have signed offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom.

In a corresponding move, defensive lineman A.J. Francis has been released.

Bergstrom, 31, is in his sixth NFL season out of the University of Utah. Drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the third round (No. 95 overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft, Bergstrom has spent time with Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens over the course of his career.

In total, the 6-foot-5, 315 pounder has appeared in 44 regular season games with four starts.

After appearing in nine games with one start during his rookie season, Bergstrom appeared in all 16 regular season games during the 2014 regular season with three starts.

In his lone season with the Houston Texans in 2016, Bergstrom appeared in 15 games.

Bergstrom spent this past offseason with the Cardinals before being traded to the Ravens, where he appeared in four games before being released on Monday.

In four seasons with Utah, Bergstrom appeared in 48 games with 39 starts at right tackle.

During his senior season in 2011, Bergstrom was named a first-team All-Pac-12 selection. He also earned a second-team All-Mountain West selection during his junior season, holding strong for a Utes offensive line that allowed just 12 sacks during the season.

Bergstrom’s signing comes at a time when Washington’s offensive line is plagued by injuries.

Starting tackles Trent Williams (knee) and Morgan Moses (ankles), Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff (lower back/MCL sprain) and center Spencer Long (knee/quad tendinitis) all missed portions of Monday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Swing tackle Ty Nsekhe (core muscle) and backup guard Tyler Catalina (concussion) were inactive.

Due to the sheer number of injuries along the offensive line, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden modified this week’s schedule.

Instead of having practice on Wednesday, the team participated in a walkthrough. The rest of the week’s plans could be slightly altered, too, before the Redskins host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at FedExField in Landover, Md.

Gruden noted that the team may utilize more 7-on-7 and individual drills.

“Normally Wednesday is one of our heavier days, but since we played on a Monday, physical game like it was with as many injuries as we have, I made Wednesday like a Tuesday.” Gruden said. “So we’ll have a walkthrough and meeting and introduce the Cowboys. We’ll put this tape to bed. We’ll get our corrections made on Philadelphia, we’ll introduce the Cowboys, have a walkthrough. Then Thursday we’ll have probably more of a walkthrough and try to get out there and practice a little bit, give them the looks necessary and then Friday we’ll get some red zone and some more third downs and try to get some more looks and Saturday might have to do a little bit more on Saturday to make up for losing Wednesday.”
