Redskins Sign Defensive Lineman A.J. Francis To Active Roster

The Washington Redskins on Tuesday added defensive lineman A.J. Francis -- a product of the University of Maryland -- to the active roster. He is a third-year veteran.

The Washington Redskins have added Washington, D.C., native A.J. Francis to the active roster from the practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday.

In a corresponding move, long snapper Rick Lovato has been waived.

Francis was originally added to the Redskins’ practice squad earlier this year after previous stints with the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The defensive lineman has appeared in three regular season games (two with the Seahawks, one with the Dolphins) during the course of his NFL career, all coming during the 2015 season.

The University of Maryland product originally entered the NFL as a college free agent after going undrafted in 2013.

During his time with the Terrapins, Francis appeared in 37 games with 23 starts. He was a three-time Academic All-ACC selection and a 2009 freshman All-American when he collected 31 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.

Francis joins a defensive line that features veterans Chris Baker, Ziggy Hood, Ricky Jean Francois and Cullen Jenkins along with rookies Anthony Lanier and Matt Ioannidis.

The 6-foot-5, 330 pounder will wear No. 69 after recently making a uniform number change from No. 97.

Lovato, meanwhile, appeared in the Redskins’ last two games – against the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys – as Nick Sundberg dealt with a back injury.

Sundberg, 29, appeared in 41 consecutive regular season games dating back to the 2014 opener before being inactive the last two weeks.
