Redskins Sign Cornerback Quinton Dunbar To Multi-Year Extension

Posted Jan 1, 2018

After transitioning from wide receiver to cornerback during the 2015 season, Quinton Dunbar has continued to develop in Washington's defense as he had his best season to date in 2017.

After transitioning from wide receiver to cornerback during the 2015 season, Quinton Dunbar has continued to develop in Washington's defense as he had his best season to date in 2017.

The Washington Redskins announced on Monday that they have signed cornerback Quinton Dunbar to a multi-year extension.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dunbar, 25, recently completed his third season with the Redskins after originally joining Washington as a college free agent signing out of the University of Florida.

In 40 career games, Dunbar has amassed 74 tackles (64 solo) along with 18 passes defensed, three interceptions, one fumble recovery and one sack.

During the 2015 season, the Miami native set new personal bests in games appeared in (15), tackles (35), passes defensed (eight) and games started four).

While Dunbar has excelled for Washington’s defense over the years, he started his NFL career as a wide receiver before switching over to cornerback during the team’s 2015 training camp.

“I think D-Hall [DeAngelo Hall] went down and we had a couple other injuries in the secondary and we needed some people in one-on-ones over there,” said Redskins head coach Jay Gruden of the decision to move Dunbar to cornerback. “I saw Dunbar playing on punt – cover team – and he was blocking the flyers and doing extremely well. He was long so I threw him out there and put a jersey on him and he did pretty well. We kept him out over there and he’s developed.”

Gruden added that Dunbar simply “loves to compete,” which became an asset in his move to cornerback, a position he hadn’t played before.

“He thinks he can cover anybody, anytime, anywhere,” Gruden said. “And that’s a great mentality to have as a corner and that’s the way he feels. He’s been out here at practice covering DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garçon last year, and this year with all these other guys. He’s just, ‘Line ‘em up,’ he’s just bump and run. That’s the mindset that he has and that’s a great mindset to have. He’s got a short memory. If he does get beat, he’ll come right back up and play bump and run and cover you. We’re excited to watch him play.”

Dunbar’s first two interceptions of his career came off of New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning while his first career sack came against Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in Week 15 of the 2015 season.

He also logged an interception off Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz during the 2017 regular season.

With the Redskins heading into the 2018 offseason, Washington currently has Dunbar along with Josh Norman, Fabian Moreau, Kendall Fuller and Joshua Holsey under contract with Bashaud Breeland currently set to become an unrestricted free agent.
