Drive Of The Game: Thompson Finishes Quick-Response Drive

This week's Redskins Drive of the Game, presented by Ford, was a seven-play, 81-yard drive finished off by a Chris Thompson seven-yard touchdown catch that gave the Redskins the lead.

It’s been a successful template that the Redskins have drawn up multiple times – a big pass play to tight end Vernon Davis and a short pass to running back Chris Thompson, who figures out how to find the end zone.

That occurred again Monday night in the team’s 34-24 loss to the Eagles, when Cousins, after a sly pump fake to his right, connected with Davis for a 31-yard pass play over the middle, well over the head of the linebacker covering him. Five plays later, Thompson slipped through the middle of the line and caught an easy touchdown pass, walking into the end zone untouched.

The score gave the Redskins the lead after a seven-play, 81 yard drive that began with a Cousins scramble for 11 yards up the sideline. Cousins looked back to the sideline on the next play, throwing a dart to wide receiver Josh Doctson, who caught the pass around the line of scrimmage and made a nice move to slip by the cornerback and sprint up the field before running out of bounds.

The following play, Cousins found Davis over the middle for the big gain on the drive. In typical fashion, Davis began sprinting up field before changing directions, trying to wring as much yardage as he could underneath the safeties guessing his direction.

He settled for a 31-yard gain that Thompson followed with a four-yard rush. Cousins then found wide receiver Jamison Crowder for eight yards and a first down on a short pass play to the right. Cousins then threw an incompletion to tight end Jordan Reed, who returned to form Monday night, but a hands to the face penalty gave the Redskins a first down on the five-yard line.

After running back Rob Kelley lost a couple of yards on a rush up the middle, Cousins returned to his bread and butter, finding Thompson unaccounted for in the flat on the left. He waltzed into the end zone and gave the Redskins the lead.

“Kirk competed and made some great throws, some great plays, and threw three touchdowns,” head coach Jay Gruden said. “But for the most part, there’s a few … I’m sure he wished he had back.  Some I wish I had back and everybody in this locker room wishes they had back.”
