Drive Of The Game: Davis Reaches Milestone With Touchdown Drive

This week's Redskins Drive of the Game, presented by Ford, was a nine-play, 77-yard drive capped by a Vernon Davis touchdown that recorded some history in the process.

The Redskins offense didn’t have much success against the Chargers in their 30-13 loss on Sunday in Los Angeles, but their most effective drive in the second quarter scored them a touchdown, made some history along the way and got the team out of its early funk.

Specifically that came on a 23-yard touchdown pass to tight Vernon Davis from quarterback Kirk Cousins, who nicely eluded the Chargers’ rush, began running up the middle of the pocket and throw towards the right side of the end zone mid-step finding Davis in between defenders for an easy score, cutting the Chargers lead to just seven points.

On the reception, Davis passed Kellen Winslow (541) for the 10th-most career receptions by a tight end in NFL history, accomplishing the feat against the team for whom Winslow played his entire nine-year career. It was Davis’s second touchdown of the season and first since his scoring grab against the Raiders.

Davis also pushed his career total of touchdowns to 59, pulling him one touchdown reception closer to Redskins legend Jerry Smith for the seventh-most career touchdowns by a tight end in NFL history.

The drive began with a four-yard rush from running back Samaje Perine before wide receiver Ryan Grant nearly took one to the house. Cousins hit Grant on a seam route up the middle perfectly in stride and the Tulane product ran 28 yards before getting taken down.

Perine gained eight yards and then was stopped for no gain, setting up a third down in which Cousins threw incomplete deep to Vernon Davis, just out of his reach. The Redskins went for it on fourth down and converted, thanks to a spectacular 15-yard catch from tight end Niles Paul, who was hit after leaping for the football and hit on the way down.

After two more Perine rushes, Cousins went back to the air, stepped up and delivered a dart to Davis waiting in the end zone for the score.

“That’s cool, but right now, with the loss, I’m not really worried about that at the moment,” Davis said. “I’m sure later on in life, after the season’s over, I’ll ponder on it and be like ‘Wow, that’s a great accomplishment.’ As far as right now, there’s nothing for me to really be excited about. Today was a tough one for us, and tomorrow will be better. I’ll get excited about practice all over again, but right now I’m just going to take this time to reflect and get my mind right.”
