Drive Of The Game: Bibbs Makes First Impression On Touchdown Drive

This week's Redskins Drive of the Game, presented by Ford, was a five-play, 63-yard drive capped by a Kapri Bibbs touchdown in his first game with the team.

Things started a little shaky for newly activated running back Kapri Bibbs, but within a matter of minutes he had shed his nerves and given the Redskins six points en route to their 20-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Bibbs caught a 36-yard screen pass and, using a couple of blocks from his offensive linemen chugging into open space, sprinted down the sideline and into the end zone. It was his first touchdown of the year and first game with the Redskins, the team that gave him a chance after being on street for most of the season. The score concluded a five-play, 63-yard drive and gave Washington a double-digit lead in the second quarter.

The drive started with a Samaje Perine run for one yard before Bibbs entered the game for the first time in a Redskins uniform. Before the snap, flags flew and Bibbs was called for a false start. Immediately making up for his error, Bibbs caught a pass out of the backfield and ran 10 yards, providing a little taste of his burst.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins found wide receiver Jamison Crowder for five yards to convert on third down and then threw a deeper pass to wide receiver Josh Doctson. Arizona received a pass interference penalty, moving the ball 16 yards further.

After an incompletion to wide receiver Ryan Grant, Cousins went back to Bibbs using a double play-action screen pass. Bibbs collected the pass and had ample running room up the right side of the field. Hesitating midway through his run to make a defender miss, Bibbs sprinted past him and found the end zone.

“I think it says a lot for [Running Backs Coach] Randy [Jordan] trying to get these guys ready to play, but also for Kapri [Bibbs] to come in here and really be diligent about learning what he has to do, you know, as far as protection, route combinations, route concepts, and audibles, and no-huddle that we did a little bit today,” head coach Jay Gruden said. “I think it is credit to Kapri and Coach Jordan, and then Kapri taking advantage of the opportunities that he got. He ran a great screen pass, weaved his way through traffic and got a touchdown. Drew another holding call on another screen pass, and had a couple of other catches for us that were quite significant. So, happy for Kapri. Glad he got his opportunity and took advantage of it.”

Bibbs finished with two carries for six yards and four catches for 47 yards. The game is just the start of what he hopes can be a promising stint with the Redskins.

“All week I’ve been working with the guys and we’ve all been working hard in practice and it’s just- I’m happy to be able to contribute to the team and just be able to have an impact on the game,” Bibbs said.
