#DALvsWAS Injury Report: Brandon Scherff Questionable

Posted Oct 27, 2017

The Washington Redskins could still have Brandon Scherff in the lineup this weekend, as the Pro Bowl guard is listed as questionable for the game against the Cowboys.

The Washington Redskins could still have Brandon Scherff in the lineup this weekend, as the Pro Bowl guard is listed as questionable for the game against the Cowboys.

This week's injury report is brought to you by Inova, the Official Health System of the Washington Redskins.

The Washington Redskins head into Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys with center Spencer Long (knees), tackle Ty Nsekhe (core muscle) and linebacker Mason Foster (shoulder) ruled out for the contest.

Tackles Trent Williams (knee) and Morgan Moses (ankles), guards Brandon Scherff (knee/back) and Tyler Catalina (concussion), linebacker Preston Smith (groin), cornerbacks Josh Norman (rib), Bashaud Breeland (knee) and Fabian Moreau (hamstring) and safeties Stefan McClure (knee/hamstring) and Deshazor Everett (hamstring) are questionable for the NFC East matchup, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announced on Friday.

While Nsekhe has been ruled out for the fourth straight game as he continues his rehab from a core muscle injury that required surgery, Long will miss his first game since Week 14 of the 2016 season.

The University of Nebraska product has been dealing with knee/quad tendinitis, but fought through the pain to play a majority of Washington’s game this past Monday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With Long sidelined, the Redskins will look to rookie Chase Roullier to make his first career start.

Roullier was selected in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, making the active roster as one of the team’s backup offensive linemen.

“That’s kind of been my role here, just to fill in wherever I’m needed in those inside three positions,” Roullier said. “It’s what I’ve been preparing for in practice this entire season, so I felt pretty prepared to play whatever position I needed to. Obviously, it’s always tough whenever so many guys are going down and you’re flipping around all sorts of different positions. It’s something that I’ve been practicing for and it went pretty well.”

As for Scherff, the Redskins hope that the Pro Bowl guard can make his 39th consecutive start after being selected with the No. 5-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The University of Iowa product suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain against the Eagles and did not practice throughout the week. He is also dealing with a back injury.

Williams and Moses also missed portions of Monday night’s game. While it’s never ideal to have four of five starting offensive linemen listed on the injury report, Washington benefits from the fact they’ve had the same group of starters for more than a year now.

“It’s been a couple years now that Long and Scherff and Williams and Moses and [Shawn] Lauvao have been playing together, so a week here or there isn’t the end of the world,” said Redskins head coach Jay Gruden about the offensive line’s ability to practice. “You’d love for them to all be healthy and working in unison day after day after day but you don’t always have that luxury, and this is just one of those times. We just have to deal with it and get the other guys ready. The good thing is, we’re getting a lot of good reps for Catalina and obviously Chase so it’s been good in that regard.”

Norman, meanwhile, could make his return to the field this Sunday after missing the Redskins’ past two games after suffering a rib fracture earlier this month.

He was limited in Washington’s practices on Thursday and Friday, as he’s getting back a full range of motion.

“It feels a little sore, but that comes with the territory of that injury, but I felt fine,” Norman said. “I don’t see any problems or reasons why I can’t go this week.”

At the outside linebacker spot, Smith’s groin injury also limited throughout the week but could still suit up against Dallas and his former college teammate at Mississippi State, Dak Prescott.

So far this season, Smith leads the Redskins in sacks with 4.5.

“I think he’s feeling a lot better than we expected but we’ll see,” Gruden said. “Playing that position with a groin [injury] and the change of direction and the leverage that you have to play with, I think you can feel OK but until you really feel the weight of people like Tyron Smith and Zack Martin and Jason Witten on you and having to adjust, that’s a different story.”

At inside linebacker, Foster is going to undergo surgery for a torn labrum he's fought through ever since Week 2. Gruden said he's going to be placed on Injured Reserve.

With Foster sidelined, the Redskins will look to Will Compton, Martrell Spaight and Josh Harvey-Clemons to step up. Gruden added that the team is going to sign a player to replace Foster on the 53-man roster.
