2017 Free Agency Outlook: Nose Tackles

Posted Feb 17, 2017

With free agency set to begin in March, Redskins.com's Stephen Czarda previews the 2017 NFL free agent class position-by-position. Today's focus is on the nose tackles.

With free agency set to begin in March, Redskins.com's Stephen Czarda previews the 2017 NFL free agent class position-by-position. Today's focus is on the nose tackles.

Last season, the Washington Redskins used multiple defensive linemen to play the nose tackle position following the departure of Terrance Knighton.

Despite being in his 11th NFL season with the Redskins, 33-year-old Kedric Golston earned the starting nose tackle position for the regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Golston played on 28 defensive snaps against the Steelers, but six days later on the first snap of Washington’s Week 2 game against the Dallas Cowboys, the University of Georgia product suffered a season-ending hamstring injury and was placed on Injured Reserve.

The Redskins went back to a rotation of defensive linemen, with Ziggy Hood getting the most play on the interior.

While Hood could be among those returning and the Redskins also signed Phil Taylor to a Reserve/Future contract in January, Golston enters free agency following the completion of a one-year deal signed last March.

Here is a list of the nose tackles/defensive tackles currently scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at 4 p.m. ET March 1, via NFL.com:

  • Frostee Rucker, Arizona Cardinals
  • Jonathan Babineaux, Atlanta Falcons
  • Brandon Williams, Baltimore Ravens
  • Corbin Bryant, Buffalo Bills
  • Leger Douzable, Buffalo Bills
  • Kawann Short, Carolina Panthers
  • Kyle Love, Carolina Panthers
  • Domata Peko, Cincinnati Bengals
  • Brandon Thompson, Cincinnati Bengals
  • Terrell McClain, Dallas Cowboys
  • Sylvester Williams, Denver Broncos
  • Stefan Charles, Detroit Lions
  • Tyrunn Walker, Detroit Lions
  • Vince Wilfork, Houston Texans
  • Devon Still, Houston Texans
  • Tyson Alualu, Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Abry Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Jordan Hill, Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Dontari Poe, Kansas City Chiefs
  • Alan Branch, New England Patriots
  • Nick Fairley, New Orleans Saints
  • Johnathan Hankins, New York Giants
  • Stacy McGee, Oakland Raiders
  • Bennie Logan, Philadelphia Eagles
  • Ricardo Mathews, Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Sean Lissemore, San Diego Chargers
  • Tony McDaniel, Seattle Seahawks
  • John Jenkins, Seattle Seahawks
  • Sealver Siliga, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Akeem Spence, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Karl Klug, Tennessee Titans
  • Kedric Golston, Washington Redskins

Brandon Williams could be looking for a new team following four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. The Missouri Southern State product is coming off a 51-tackle season in which he also recorded one sacks and a pass defensed.

For his career, the 6-foot-1, 340 pounder has collected 156 tackles with 4.5 sacks, three fumbles forced and three passes defensed.

While many expect the Carolina Panthers to place the franchise tag on Kawann Short, the 28-year-old would be a wanted commodity if he were to hit the open market.

In four seasons with the Panthers, the 2015 second-team All-Pro has tallied 179 tackles with 22 sacks and six fumbles forced.

Dontari Poe will also demand a lot of attention, as the 6-foot-3, 346 pounder is a two-time Pro Bowler who has appeared in all but two regular season games over the last five years. The 26-year-old has amassed 200 tackles with 13 sacks and two fumbles forced during that span.

Another potential young option for the Redskins is 27-year-old Bennie Logan. The 2013 third-round pick has totaled 163 tackles with 5.5 sacks and three fumbles forced so far in his career.

If the Redskins were to go with a more veteran option, Frostee Rucker, Alan Branch and Vince Wilfork have all played at least 10 NFL seasons.
