Mike Mayock To Senior Bowl QBs: Who's The Next Kirk Cousins?

"Who's the next Trent Williams?"

That's the challenge NFL Media draft expert Mike Mayock issued to the current crop of quarterbacks at this year's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

"Who's gonna be that third, fourth, fifth round guy that comes out of the Senior Bowl and becomes a starter capable of leading a team into the playoffs?" Mayock asked, via @NFLNetwork on Wtitter.

We all know Cousins' story by now. He was a standout quarterback at Michigan State, but said his career was altered at the Senior Bowl, where he was the North team's third-stringer behind Russell Wilson and Kellen Moore.

"Looking back you hear a lot about the Combine and you hear a lot about pro day, but there was no bigger week for me than the Senior Bowl," Cousins said.

He would impress many at the Senior Bowl, completing 5-of-11 passes for 115 yards with a touchdown and an interception. His 41-yard pass to Arizona State receiver Gerrell Robinson helped lead his North team to the 23-13 win.

The South team's coaches that day? The Washington Redskins', led by then-head coach Mike Shanahan.

"Coach Shanahan later told me after the fact that he noticed some throws that I made during that game caught his attention," Cousins said. "I think it caused him to keep an eye on me as he went back to D.C. and watched some film on the potential quarterbacks to draft."

Shanahan would draft Cousins in the fourth round (102nd overall), and, after paying his dues, he took over just prior to Week 1 last season and overcame an up-and-down start to break several Redskins single-season passing records, and, most notably, lead his team to the NFC East title.

Back to Mayock. He sees a lot of Cousins in this year's crop of quarterbacks, which include: Jeff Driskel, Louisiana Tech; Kevin Hogan, Stanford; Cody Kessler, Southern Cal; Carson Wentz, North Dakota State; Brandon Allen, Arkansas; Jacoby Brissett, North Carolina State; Jake Coker, Alabama; and Dak Prescott, Mississippi State.

"I think there are more QBs that are candidates to be that guy than any year in recent history," Mayock said.
