Fans Of #SkinsCamp: Day 7

Posted Aug 6, 2015

Maurice Perry was ready for Robert Griffin III's first child to be a son, at least for his shirt's sake. He's just as hopeful Reese becomes a star athlete now.

Like fans who predict a championship for their football team by tattooing their body with victorious roman numerals, Maurice Perry made himself a shirt predicting a baby boy.

His odds were much better than most of the Lombardi trophy inkers, and a mistake wouldn’t nearly cost him as much embarrassment. But “RG4,” a stand-in slogan for Robert Griffin III’s son printed onto a burgundy T-shirt, was not to be. At least, as of now.

“Last year, when [Griffin’s] wife got pregnant, I had RG4 [printed],” Perry said. “I thought it was going to be a son, but it was a daughter. So I started changing it this year. I started putting RG3.5 in the front for a baby girl. And RG4 in the back, which would be waiting on the baby boy.”

Perry has been a Redskins fan since 1982, when he moved to Washington, D.C., after previously rooting for the Eagles, an unlikely switch in allegiance.

“I tell you what, what made me change was [John] Riggins,” Perry said. “When I saw Darrell Green run down Tony Dorsett and John Riggins get that touchdown against Miami, that crossed me over.”

Now a resident of Dunphries, Va., Perry served in the U.S. Army for 20 years and spent 12 years in the department of homeland security, though he was really employed by the secret service. But keep that on the down low.

Now, anyways, he enjoys fishing trips to Lake Anna with his friend of 30 years, Keith Clayberg, who drives a boat and joins him for training camp at least once a year, dating back to their many visits in Ashburn.

Thursday, Perry woke up at 3 a.m. to catch the early practice against the Texans, and has received plenty of quizzical looks from that shirt of his.

If Reese Ann Griffin becomes a star athlete, “I’ll put the four here [pointing to the front of his shirt], and a five in the back.”
