Washington Redskins Morning Clips: 6/14

Posted Jun 14, 2013

A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Friday, June 14, 2013.

A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Friday, June 14, 2013.

--With news that the Redskins' coaching staff does not intend to change the offense dramatically heading into 2013, one reporter asks if the read-option is really the best way to protect quarterback Robert Griffin III.

--If that's the case, then whose job is it to make sure Robert Griffin III stays upright this season? A hint: all 10 of his teammates on the field during a given play.

--Don't understand all of the hype and controversy over the Redskins' zone-read offense? One reporter gives readers a crash course on the ins and outs of the new-fangled NFL sensation.

--One of the reasons the Redskins went out and drafted two late-round running backs this year is because they liked what they saw from Alfred Morris. If that doesn't quite add up, consider that the Redskins and Morris are both focused on having a long, successful career in Washington.

--The fullback competition was narrowed to two yesterday, as the Redskins waived Dorson Boyce, leaving Darrel Young and Eric Kettani as the only fullbacks on the roster.

--Starting Redskins fullback Darrel Young was a restricted free agent this past offseason and told the media he was excited to be back with the Redskins for another year.

--The Redskins put a lot of faith in cornerback David Amerson with the 51st overall pick, projecting him as a starter on the outside of the defense. News out of minicamp is that he is already getting comfortable in the system.

--Redskins rookie safeties Baccari Rambo and Phillip Thomas have been discussed as a package deal so far in their NFL careers, but what are their unique features? Unit coach Raheem Morris breaks down their individual strengths.

--With head coach Mike Shanahan saying he wasn't sure when defensive end Adam Carrike would be available to return to the practice field, Carriker himself tells ESPn 980 that he doesn't have full range of motion yet and may begin training camp on the PUP list.

--It's a tough time for Washington sports fans when Robert Griffin III and Bryce Harper on the shelf.  Long term, both should be fine, but the injuries are scary.

--Who starts at safety? Do the Redskins retain the same offensive line? These questions and more remain for the Redskins going into training camp.

--One player that factors heavily into the discussion for safety is the healthy return of Brandon Meriweather, who is expected to be ready for training camp.

--Here's a look ahead at the NFL calendar from now until training camp on July 25 in Richmond, Va.

--In the discussion of the Redskins name debate, we have an open letter, a focus group discussion, a comparison in terminology and a historical review.
