Washington Redskins Morning Clips: 6/13

Posted Jun 13, 2013

A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Thursday, June 13, 2013.

A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Thursday, June 13, 2013.

--The Redskins signed Kevin Matthews as an upgrade in depth at center, and the veteran offensive lineman has embraced his opportunity for a fresh start in Washington.

--With more options in the secondary, Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett expects the unit and the defense as a whole to thrive in 2013.

--Both Kyle and Mike Shanahan have defended the use of the zone-read offense this offseason, and the younger Shanahan told the media yesterday that the system tends to slow down defenses who must account for the quarterback.

--Veteran Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker has been relegated to the rehab room since tearing his ACL in Week 2 of the 2012 season. Heading into an important training camp competition, Carriker missed out on practicing with teammates for the entire offseason program.

--If you liked what you saw out of the NFL's No. 5 overall offense and top rushing attack last season, you will be pleased to hear that the Redskins' coaching staff is not planning any major changes to the playbook heading into 2013.

--Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan says the beauty of the Redskins offensive game plan is that they don't need to make major changes in order to protect franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III.

--The Redskins practiced with Richard Crawford, Santana Moss, DeAngelo Hall, Nick Williams and Skye Dawson at punt returner during offseason workouts, but is the team really settled on a full-time punt returner?

--As will be discussed extensively during Redskins minicamp, sometimes the Redskins' rookie defensive backs look like seasoned veterans in the secondary. Other times they look like rookies, learning the system on the fly.

--Despite any early indications and assumptions made by the media, Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett endorsed the three rookie defensive backs, singing their praises on the last day of minicamp.

--After one season in the NFL as a wide receiver and last season converting to tight end, third-year receiver Niles Paul said he finally feels at home in the tight end position heading into training camp.

--Observations from yesterday's final minicamp practice at Redskins Park.

--The Redskins signed tryout wide receiver Donte' Stallworth in a move that was anticipated by many coming out of minicamp.

--The Redskins drew support for the team name from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

--Redskins reportedly set up a focus group on the team name.
