A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Thursday, December 5, 2013.

.

--Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III sheds any doubt that there is any problems between himself and the Redskins coaching staff. Questions arose due to head coach Mike Shanahan’s contract due to expire next year and Griffin said, “I think these guys have a great future. I love having them here.”

--Head coach Mike Shanahan gave no indication of showcasing backup quarterback Kirk Cousins over the last four games of the season. Cousins did receive a start last year vs. the Browns where he led the Redskins to a win, throwing for two touchdowns and completed 26 of 37 passes.

--Redskins defensive lineman Stephen Bowen faces a six month recovery time after having microfracture surgery on his right knee. Bowen tore his PCL early in the season and in Week 11 he injured it further causing him to have the surgery.

--An injury report update including left tackle Trent Williams’ health after he sat out practice on Wednesday.

--Offensive lineman Maurice Hurt was placed on injured reserve after rehabbing from knee surgery in the spring. Hurt had spent time practicing on an evaluation basis but the Redskins staff felt he was too far removed to return to game speed.

--Linebacker Brian Orakpo leads the team in sacks with 8.5 and is one of seven defensive starters eligible for free agency after the season but would prefer to stay with Washington.

--Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss feels the NFL officiating this season is “the worst I’ve ever seen.” Moss received an unsportsmanlike penalty vs. the Giants for complaining about a holding call and said, “It was a BS call.”

--Despite struggles in his Sophomore season, backup quarterback Kirk Cousins knows that quarterback Robert Griffin III needs to play. Cousins said, “He’s getting better and he’s learning and it doesn’t happen overnight.”

--Why one reporter feels that Mike Shanahan made a mistake by hiring his son Kyle as the Redskins offensive coordinator. This season the Redskins lead the league in rushing but questions have come from the relationship that Kyle has with quarterback Robert Griffin III.

--What the Giants did to limit Redskins running back Alfred Morris and held him to just 26 yards rushing. The Giants ran multiple different defensive fronts including 4-3, a 3-4 and eight-man fronts with a safety playing near the line of scrimmage.

--Former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley thinks the Redskins should abandon the read-option plays from their playbook. Cooley said on quarterback Robert Griffin III “When you look at him as a runner, he is not an impactful runner in any way shape or form.”

--One reporter debates if the Redskins should keep rookie tight end Jordan Reed on the sideline for the rest of the year. Reed was expected to play vs. the 49ers but suffered a setback before kickoff and was held out of the game.

--What you need to know three days before the Washington Redskins play the Kansas City Chiefs including how the Redskins plan to address their sack problems. The Redskins have allowed 19 sacks in the past four games.

--A look ahead at the Redskins remaining schedule of games, offensive and defensive MVP’s and the top three storylines for the Redskins this week. One storyline to follow is how the lack of turnovers has hurt the Redskins, the Redskins had 15 takeaways through their first eight games and have only three in their last four games.

--Why the Redskins offense has struggledduring the second half of games this season. In the last four games the Redskins rushing offense has dropped by over 50 percent in the second half of games and the Redskins have only scored 22 points in the second half in the past four games.
