A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Monday, January 13, 2013.

All reports, rumors and conjecture are a reflection of the media conversation and are not endorsed or confirmed by the Washington Redskins.

--How Redskins general manager Bruce Allen is establishing a more public role with the Redskins franchise. Allen spoke about rebuilding the team this offseason and said, “At the end of the day, it will be my responsibility.”

--One reporter looks at new head coach Jay Gruden and compares him to coaching great Joe Gibbs. Gibbs was the last offensive coordinator with a relative unknown track record to coach the Redskins.

--As the offseason approaches, one reporter looks ahead to free agency and if Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker could be a target for the Redskins front office this offseason. Decker had 87 catches this season and 11 touchdowns.

--Why there will be no quarterback competition heading into the 2014 season and why quarterback Kirk Cousins may be traded before the season starts.

--According to reports the Washington Redskins did not schedule interviews with San Francisco 49ers offensive and defensive coordinators. On Sunday ESPN reported the 49ers were “not happy” that the Redskins did not interview their coordinators.

--After a disappointing season, defensive coordinator Jim Haslett looks to rebuild next season. One reporter poses the question if Haslett should remain defensive coordinator despite his ties to head coach Jay Gruden who he coached with in the UFL.

--A breakdown of the 2013 season where the Redskins finished 3-13 and look to move forward with a new head coach Jay Gruden. Gruden said, “I don’t know what happened last year…all I care about Is next year.”

--Why one reporter feels the Redskins handled the hiring of Jay Gruden the right way and if Gruden will help lead this franchise to consistent winning seasons. As offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals, Gruden helped his team reach the playoffs three straight years and his offense improved overall in three straight years.

--Some responsibilities for new head coach Jay Gruden including the hiring of assistant coaches. Key coaching positions such as both offensive and defensive line coaches and quarterback coach remain to be filled.

--Why head coach Jay Gruden will help quarterback Robert Griffin III develop in Griffin’s third year in the NFL. Gruden was a quarterback in college, the UFL and AFL before he began his coaching career.

--One reporter's take on why the Redskins chose to keep certain members of the coaching staff after firing head coach Mike Shanahan. One reporter speculates that the Redskins may be trying to save money instead of buying out other coaches contracts.

--A look at Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett who had 8.5 sacks this season. Bennett will reportedly be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and could help solidify the Redskins defensive line.

--Why current players and former tight end Chris Cooley are speaking highly of tight ends coach Sean McVay. Tight end Logan Paulsen said, “Every week he’d try to call plays without looking at the sheet. He knows what everyone has to do on the field.”

--Wide receiver Pierre Garcon spoke on “NFL AM” and commented on new head coach Jay Gruden. Garcon said, “They did well in Cincinnati with their red zone offense, I think he can definitely bring in some new wrinkles.”
