Taylor: 'I Expect Us to Think Like Winners'

Posted Dec 29, 2005

The second-year safety discusses Sunday's game against the Eagles--and offers up his New Year's Resolution. Q&A Interview

Safety Sean Taylor spoke with Redskins.com about this Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles -- and offers up his New Year’s Resolution:

Q: How pumped up are you for Sunday’s game against the Eagles?

A: "Like every week, I’m going to be very excited. It’s Philly--we haven’t won in their home stadium, so it’ll be tough. For those guys, it’ll be their last game of the season and they would love to do what we did to Minnesota last year and what the Arizona Cardinals did to Minnesota the year before, which is to try to knock a team out of the playoffs. We just have to handle our business, and we’ll be all right."

Q: How dangerous is a team that comes into a game with the intention of being a spoiler?

A: "You don’t look at them like that. You just look at the X’s and O’s and how you go about attacking them as a team. They don’t have Brian Westbrook and Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens, but you see on film that they have some good players. They’re going to play hard. Anybody who plays at this level is very talented. As a team, we just have to make sure you don’t look past them. I don’t think we’ll have any problems in that regard come Sunday."

Q: Do you feel like this team is starting to get respect in the league?

A: "We don’t need respect. We don’t want respect--until after we play you."

Q: How proud are you of this team that it was able to rebound from three straight losses to get to 9-6 and a shot at the playoffs?

A: "I’m proud of it, but I expect it. I expect that we think like winners and champions, and wanting to go to the playoffs and wanting to win Super Bowls. We shouldn’t be striving to be just a good team, or to win a couple games and go home at the end of the season. We want to play until February, if we can. I think we’re all starting to take that approach, as far as who we have on this team. Everybody is about winning, working together and going to the playoffs. That’s what we’ve been focusing on and that’s what our coaches have been focusing on."

Q: Assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams says he wants the team to play with a chip on their shoulder. What has he said to the defense this week in practice?

A: "We play with a chip on our shoulder every week. Coach Williams is great. Like any great coach, if he stops talking to you or stops demanding the best from you, that means he doesn’t care about you. He’s demanding effort. He’s demanding that we step up and play our best every week, that we learn from our mistakes and correct them. That’s what makes us keep getting better."

Q: Has Coach Williams kept you focused on the goal of beating the Eagles on Sunday?

A: "He’s been that way when we were 6-10 last year. We didn’t have a lot of hope late in the season, but we went out each week and played hard and played together. We held up our bargain and the offense held up their bargain. This year, we’ve been a little more fortunate in getting some wins. With our hard work, who knows how far we can go?"

Q: What’s your New Year’s resolution?

A: "Just to make a difference. Any way you can -- just make a difference in somebody else’s life or a loved one’s life. That’s it."
