Shanahan: Griffin III 'Pretty Close' To Ready

Posted Dec 20, 2012

Redskins HC Mike Shanahan stopped short of naming a starter for Sunday's game vs. the Eagles, but did say that QB Robert Griffin III was "pretty close to full speed."

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan stopped short of naming a starter at quarterback for Sunday's game vs. the Eagles, but did say that Robert Griffin III was "pretty close to full speed."

"What the doctors will do is evaluate him [Thursday]," Shanahan said. "Hopefully there is no setback, no swelling with the knee. When they feel like the ligament is strong and they feel like there is no setback."

Griffin III practiced fully on Wednesday and took most of the repetitions in practice, although percentages were not discussed. Afterward, he reported no pain or setbacks in his preparation.

"I’m ready to play whenever they want me to play – whether it’s this week, next week, a couple weeks," Griffin III said. "Whatever they say goes, so I’ll be ready."

He continued to wear the brace on his right knee for support and protection. He told the media on Wednesday that any lingering weakness from the injury is gone.

"It didn’t feel weak or unstable, so that’s good. Today was very encouraging for me and for the doctors – for everybody. I feel really good," he said.  "It was exciting to get back out there and practice with everybody – get ready for the game."

Griffin III reiterated that he felt good enough to play last Sunday and that he was disappointed to sit out a critical game in the hunt for the playoffs, but understands the thinking behind it.

"It is frustrating. Like I said, players play," he said. "I told [my teammates] in the locker room when they told me [I wouldn’t play] that night I would be upset, but once we step on the field, I was all for this team and all for Kirk [Cousins].

"That’s the way you have to approach it. You don’t take those things to the field and try to become a cancer or a distraction to the team. You support the team."

Starting in Griffin III's place, Cousins led the offense on six scoring drives, finishing 26-for-37 for 329 yards and two touchdowns.

He also addressed the media on Wednesday, saying that he will continue to prepare like a starter until told otherwise.

"I’m still preparing and focusing on my opportunity to play like I did in past weeks," Cousins said. "I guess that’s not changing this week. Certainly, Robert [Griffin III] is healing. He’s getting stronger every day, but I’m still approaching it like I may still have an opportunity to play and I need to do my job day-to-day to be ready to go."

Shanahan reiterated that Griffin III was his starting quarterback and that if he was ready to play on Sunday, no consideration would be given to resting him.

"He will be evaluated through the week," he told the media. "[Team doctors] will look at it [Thursday] and hopefully they will tell us it is full-go. I’m not sure when they are going to make that decision.

"When the doctors tell me the ligament is ready to go, I will announce when he is ready to go."
