Shanahan Expects Perfect OTA Attendance

Posted Jun 4, 2012

Despite the voluntary nature of offseason workouts, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has been pleased with the team's perfect attendance thus far.

Entering the final week of OTAs, before the start next week's of veteran mini-camp, head coach Mike Shanahan was pleased to report perfect attendance to this phase of offseason workouts.

"We’ve got 100 percent attendance, and we got a lot of people working hard, going in the same direction," he said.  "That’s what you look for in the OTA days."

Shanahan attributed some of the attendance to the excitement surrounding the roster, which made major strides to upgrade the offense this offseason.

With rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III already taking the reins as starter, there has been an notable energy at practices.

Shanahan also cited roster competition as a reason for the perfect attendance.  Players are not required to attend offseason workouts, but the practices give players an opportunity to battle.

"I like the competition we have," Shanahan said.  "We’ve added some free agents. We’ve added some draft choices. With the draft choices and free agents we had from a year ago, I like the makeup of our football team.

"But if people want to prove themselves, you have to practice."

Attendance has been counted for those players who have been unable to practice due to injury.  Nose tackle Barry Cofield and safety Tanard Jackson were both excused from Thursday's practice for personal reasons.

With training camp and the preason less than two months away, Shanahan expects the attendance to pay off for the Redskins.

"You’re hoping people come, because you’re all left with the same goal and I think we talked about what that goal is."
