Redskins, USAA Salute Military Members

Posted Nov 14, 2012

The Redskins and USAA are teaming up this Sunday to honor veterans and active military personnel as part of the NFL's 'Salue To Service' game against the Eagles.

The Washington Redskins and USAA will continue their long history of honoring our Nation’s veterans and current members of the military with the team’s annual “Salute to Service” game on Sunday, Nov. 18.

Kickoff for the game against the Philadelphia Eagles is set for 1 p.m.

The Redskins will display “Salute to Service” banners on the sidelines honoring all branches of the United States armed forces, in addition to honoring members of the military on the field as well as on the video boards as part of the team’s season-long “Salute to Service” campaign sponsored by USAA.

The Redskins and USAA, the presenting and an official military appreciation sponsor of the team, are joining forces to honor a military unit from the Air Force District at Washington during the game.

More than 50 members and guests (100 people total) from the local unit will be invited to the game. Gen. Larry Spencer, vice chief of staff of the Air Force, will be in attendance and serve as one of the game’s honorary captains.

Fans attending the game will be welcomed with military appreciation wristbands as they enter FedEx Field.

The wristbands are a reminder for fans to place their right hand over their heart during the national anthem to properly honor our nation’s flag, as well as current and former military members.

USAA and the Redskins will have a special military “challenge” coin for the official coin toss for the game.

The use of military challenge coins has long been a source of pride for military members to identify themselves as a member of a particular unit and the game coin pays homage to that revered tradition.

In addition to the tributes detailed above, the following “Salute to Service” elements, as well as pregame and in-game ceremonies, are planned to recognize veterans and current members of America’s armed services:

  • “Salute to Service” goal post wraps, pylons with camouflage ribbon decals and wall banners in the back of the end zones.
  • Camouflage ribbon lapel pins, towels, player’s gloves, captain’s patches and helmet decals.
  • The Redskins use of footballs with camouflage ribbons during each play.
  • Sgt. Vicki Golding of the 27th United States Army Band of the Nation’s Capital will sing the national anthem and the colors will be presented by a U.S. Marine unit.
  • USAA will honor service members from the Air Force District at Washington.

The Redskins and USAA kicked off the “Salute to Service” week on Monday, Nov. 12 by inviting more than 100 military service members from the Air Force District of Washington, located on Join Base Andrews, to watch a closed practice at Redskins Park.

Throughout the month of November, Redskins fans are also encouraged to visit www.millionfansalute.com to create a digital salute in honor of the U.S. military with the opportunity to earn USAA rewards for the Washington, D.C. area local military community.

The Washington Redskins Military Appreciation Game is part of the NFL’s “Salute to Service” campaign. Fans can find out more about the NFL’s commitment to the military and veterans by visiting www.nfl.com/salute.
