Redskins-Steelers: Just The Touchdowns

Posted Aug 19, 2013

The Redskins managed three touchdowns in a 24-13 preseason victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, one each on defense, passing and rushing.

The Redskins managed three touchdowns in a 24-13 preseason victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, one each on defense, passing and rushing.

For the Redskins defense, it was the first time since Week 6 of the 2012 regular season that the unit scored a defensive touchdown, that day off of a Madieu Williams interception return.

It was one week before that, the last time that outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown, as he did tonight to get the Redskins on the board.

No. 1: Ryan Kerrigan Denies The Screen

For his career, Ryan Kerrigan has three interceptions, each returned for a touchdown. They each happen in roughly the same way, as Kerrigan works the right tackle around to stand between the quarterback and the running back in the flat.

When the quarterback relases the ball, Kerrigan shows a deft ability to be able to shed his blocker and elevate, either tipping the pass to himself or fielding the catch cleanly.

From there, Kerrigan has a clear path to the end zone, leaving only an unfair foot race between him, the right tackle and the quarterback on the way to the end zone.

Cap it off with a football dunk over the crossbar and it's a ready-made highlight:

No. 2: Rex Grossman To Leonard Hankerson

For the second consecutive week, Rex Grossman led the offense to the red zone before looking for big No. 85 for the score.

This week, the Redskins defense recovered a number that set the offense up on their own 46-yard line in the second quarter.

After a 19-yard completion to Joshua Morgan and a 30-yard pass interference penalty, the Redskins took a five-yard penalty, backing them up to the 10-yard line.

Grossman knew where he was going from the start but needed to buy time for Hankerson to get open. Staring down the pass rush, he put it where only Hankerson could make the catch in the end zone.

Using one of his monstrous paws, Hankerson hauled in the pass for an improbable highlight reel touchdown:

No. 3: Helu And Goodbye

Needing to ice the game and lacking healthy bodies at running back, the Redskins called veteran backup Roy Helu Jr. off the bench and inserted him in place of injured options Keiland Williams and Chris Thompson.

Needing only one carry to get his work in, Helu Jr. followed the gaping seam up the middle, throwing one stiff arm and flashing the speed that has Redskins coaches licking their chops, Helu Jr. raced 30 yards for the game-sealing touchdown:
