Redskins Sign Defensive Lineman Ziggy Hood

The Washington Redskins have signed seven-year veteran Ziggy Hood. Hood has 164 career tackles with 12.5 sacks and seven passes defensed.

The Washington Redskins have signed seven-year veteran Ziggy Hood. Hood has 164 career tackles with 12.5 sacks and seven passes defensed.

The Washington Redskins are adding a veteran defensive lineman with Super Bowl experience, as the team announced on Wednesday the signing of seven-year veteran Ziggy Hood to a Reserve/Future contract.

Hood, a 2009 first-round pick out of Missouri, spent his first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was then a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2014 and 2015 seasons while also appearing in a pair of games for the Chicago Bears late last year.

During his rookie season, Hood appeared in all 16 regular season games for Pittsburgh, recording eight tackles, two passes defensed and a sack.

In 2010, Hood once again would appear in every single regular season game, starting nine of the last 10 games.

Hood would also start two of the Steelers’ three preseason games en route to a Super Bowl XLV appearance against the Green Bay Packers.

In those three postseason games, Hood recorded 10 tackles and two sacks.

Over his final three seasons with the Steelers, the Amarillo, Texas, native would start 37 games, recording 112 tackles and 7.5 sacks.

He set a career-high for tackles with 42 during the 2012 season.

Hood signed with the Jaguars before the 2014 season and was once again active for all 16 regular season games. Over the course of Jacksonville’s last six games, the 28-year-old tallied 14 tackles.

The 6-foot-3, 300 pounder started the 2015 season on Injured Reserve as he dealt with a foot injury. He was released on Oct. 20, before the Bears signed him two days later.

Hood would appear in two games with the Bears before being released in December.

The Redskins currently have defensive ends Chris Baker, Ricky Jean Francois, Stephen Paea and James Gayle under contract for the 2016 season while Christo Bilukidi and Corey Crawford have also been signed to reserve/futures contracts.

Kedric Golston and Frank Kearse are pending unrestricted free agents, while Jason Hatcher, under contract for the season, is contemplating whether to retire or play an 11th NFL season.
