Redskins Sign Blades, 11 Undrafted Rookies

Posted Aug 1, 2011

H.B. Blades has served as a backup most of his career. He is expected to compete for playing time at inside linebacker and on special teams.

The Redskins have re-signed linebacker H.B. Blades, the team announced on Monday.

Blades was on the practice fields on Monday morning watching from the sidelines. Free agents this year are not permitted to participate in practice until Aug. 4, due to new CBA rules.

Blades is entering his fifth season with the Redskins. He has played in 64 career games, with seven starts, and posted 97 tackles on defense and 71 special teams stops.

Blades joined the Redskins as a sixth-round draft pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

An inside linebacker, Blades is expected to compete for playing time with veteran Lorenzo Alexander and second-year player Perry Riley. He remains a standout on special teams coverage units.

In addition to Blades, the Redskins signed 11 undrafted rookie free agents: wide receiver Isaac Anderson, defensive back Dante Barnes, linebacker Obi Ezeh, fullback Kevin Gidrey, defensive back Tyrone Grant, linebacker Eric McBride, offensive lineman Corey O’Daniel, linebacker Kyle O’Donnell, defensive back Devonte Shannon, tight end Joe Torchia, quarterback Marc Verica and defensive tackle Thomas Weaver.

Of the new acquisitions, the most recognizable may be Verica.

He was a three-year letterman at Virginia, where he passed for 4,992 yards. In 2010, he completed 233-of-396 passes for 2,799 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also set a single-game school record with 417 passing yards vs. Duke.
