Redskins Seek Health During Time Away

Posted Nov 8, 2012

The Redskins enter the bye week with several key players on the mend and poised to return. Hear what head coach Mike Shanahan had to say on player health.

With most players away from the training facilities this week, the Redskins look to get healthy before the final seven-game stretch of the regular season.

Head coach Mike Shanahan expressed optimism that starters Pierre Garcon and Brandon Meriweather would be available after the bye, but said Garcon's injury was still a cause for concern.

"I really don’t know. I feel a little bit better about Brandon than I do Pierre right now," Shanahan said.  "For some reason [Garcon's toe injury] is one of those freak injuries you can’t understand why.  Doctors can’t explain it.  But it hurts enough that he can’t push off and get to where he was before so it’s discouraging and disheartening but he’s dealing with it.

"I know one thing: when he can play, he’ll play."

The Redskins could have a need at receiver, after Santana Moss left Sunday's game diagnosed with a concussion.

"He had a concussion," Shanahan confirmed on Monday.  "He’s going to go through the protocol of that just like everybody else has and we’ll see in time."

Quarterback Robert Griffin III received x-rays after Sunday's contest to ensure that his sore ribs were not broken.

Test results came back negative and Shanahan expects him to play tough, just like he did on Sunday.

"Quarterback’s aren’t going to tell you [if something hurts]," Shanahan said.  "Obviously you’ve got a shot at halftime to alleviate some of the pain. I’m sure he was uncomfortable."

Elsewhere, long snapper Nick Sundberg has been activated from injured reserve, leading to the release of veteran Justin Snow, who played in his 200th career game on Sunday.

Sundberg has been practicing with the team and getting back in shape after playing through a broken arm in the team's Week 2 game against the St. Louis Rams.  He is elligible to play in the Week 11 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Team doctors also cleared offensive tackle Jammal Brown for practice, and must activate him from the Physically Unable to Perform list by next week. Right tackle Tyler Polumbus has started all nine games in his absence, and his status as a starter remains unclear.

The Redskins listed seven players on the Week 9 injury report, including six starters: London Fletcher, Perry Riley, Josh Wilson, Brandon Meriweather, Pierre Garcon and Sav Rocca.

The team also has 10 players on injured reserve, including three starters: Brian Orakpo, Fred Davis and Adam Carriker.
