Redskins-Raiders: Just The Touchdowns

Posted Sep 29, 2013

The Washington Redskins scored 24-unanswered for the come-from-behind win over the Oakland Raiders on the road in the Coliseum, scoring through air, land and defense.

In what was becoming an all-too-familiar scenario, the Washington Redskins fell behind by 14 points on the road and seemed to be on the fast track to their fourth-straight loss to open the season.

But just as they have two other times this season, the Redskins defense forced a turnover and took it back for a tide-turning touchdown.

Here's a look back at the Redskins' Week 4 scoring plays:

1. Welcome To The NFL, David Amerson

When Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan was hired in 2010, he hired defensive coordinator Jim Haslett to convert the 4-3 defense to a 3-4.

It was not a popular move or a painless transition, but the Redskins can now say that they have one of the top play-making defenses in the NFL, converting their third defensive touchdown in four games and forcing three takeaways on the day.

The most important turnover came from cornerback David Amerson, who picked off Matt Flynn when the Redskins trailed 14-3, taking it 45 yards to the house. Amerson was the team's first pick in teh 2013 NFL Draft and has all of the physical and mental tools for a bright NFL future.

Getting the interception, coupled with winning a foot race with Denarius Moore (4.36 40) makes for an emphatic start to that career:

2. Pierre Garcon Stays Red Hot

Pierre Garcon carries the No. 1 label as the team's top receiver, and is showing the damage he can do when fully healthy.

Playing like a man on fire, he has 29 receptions for 339 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the season. His second touchdown was by far the most important, as it put the Redskins ahead in the second half for the first time all season.

With 17 points on the board, the defense went to town on the Raiders offense, sealing a victory nearly nine months in the making.

3. Roy Helu Jr. Puts It Away

Already leading by three, the Redskins were in a bind without starting running back Alfred Morris, who left the game with a rib injury during the team's last scoring drive.

Enter Roy Helu Jr., who had a great preseason but played sparingly so far this season. Not listed as the team's feature back since late in the 2011 season, Helu Jr. overcame early struggles and found his stride, rushing for 41 carries on 13 carries and catching two passes for 43 yards.

On the Redskins' final scoring play of the game, Roy Helu Jr. caught a 28-yard pass from Robert Griffin III to put the Redskins in the red zone. On the very next play, he dodged his way through the middle of the line for the 14-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach:
