Redskins Keeping 'Close Eye' On Santana Moss

Posted Mar 27, 2015

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said the team is monitoring veteran Santana Moss' status and will come to a decision soon about bringing him back.

The chance that wide receiver Santana Moss returns for an 11th season with the Redskins is still unknown, but head coach Jay Gruden said a decision from the Redskins side won't be made until after the NFL Draft.

A veteran of 14 NFL seasons -- and one of the best Washington Redskins when all is said and done -- wide receiver Santana Moss is a player any team could use in their locker room.

But with the Miami product turning 36 years old in June, and his placement on the depth chart last year leaving him inactive for a handful of games, there’s uncertainty about the chance he'll be back for an 11th season with the Redskins.

Head coach Jay Gruden said during Wednesday’s NFC Coaches Breakfast in Phoenix that the team is keeping a “close eye” on Moss, who is currently an unrestricted free agent.

A determination on bringing him back, though, won’t be made until after the NFL Draft.

“We’ve talked about everybody,” Gruden said in reference to free agents. “It’s just about when, how. We’ll wait until the draft to see what we have as far as numbers at every position and go from there. You know, that’s something that we know where Santana is and he knows where we are, and something may work out down the road.”

On the Monday following the Redskins’ season ending loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Moss received perhaps the most media attention at his locker.

As he stood there answering every question thrown his way, Moss made it clear he’s still going to prepare like another season is on the horizon for him.

“My future’s like every other year,” he said at the time. “I’m living and when it comes to this game, when it comes time to them picking players or bringing in players, you’ll know if I’m signed again or if I’m somewhere else. That’s how I look at it.”

Even if Moss doesn’t return, he’s already considered to be one of the greatest Redskins in franchise history, nestled between several Pro Football Hall of Famers at the top of several statistical categories.

He’s third in career receptions (581), fourth in receiving yards (7,867) and seventh in touchdowns (47).

While the numbers Moss has accumulated are certainly gaudy, a majority of his success came earlier in his Redskins tenure.

That doesn’t mean he’s still not a contributor, though.

Whether it’s the younger wide receivers working beside him in practice or even rookies on the other side of the ball, Moss is a veteran leader nearly every player on the roster looks up to.

That quality didn’t go unnoticed by Gruden in his first year as an NFL head coach.

“I could always play with Santana,” he said. “Santana’s a great person. He’s great in the locker room for us. He knows all the positions. I know he’s going to be in great shape, and I would not hesitate one bit to call him.”
