Redskins Hope to Re-sign Fletcher

Posted Mar 10, 2012

The Redskins have had negotiations with linebacker London Fletcher the last two months, general manager Bruce Allen said on Saturday. Fletcher is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday.

The Redskins have had negotiations with linebacker London Fletcher the last two months, general manager Bruce Allen said on Saturday.

“We’ll see what happens,” Allen said.

Fletcher, 36, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next Tuesday.

The Redskins have relied on Fletcher to anchor the middle of the defense for the last five seasons. A respected team leader, he has served as a defensive captain since 2008.

Last year was one of his best. He led the NFL with 209 tackles (including five for a loss) and posted 1.5 sacks, 14 quarterback hits and five takeaways.

Fletcher was named second-team All-Pro and earned his third consecutive Pro Bowl berth.

Head coach Mike Shanahan said after the 2011 season that re-signing Fletcher was one of the team’s off-season priorities.

Despite his age, Fletcher could draw plenty of interest from other teams in free agency.

“I’m not going to hide the fact that we love London Fletcher,” Allen said. “We hope that he’s a Redskin next year.”
