Redskins Have Moved On From Week 1 Loss

Posted Sep 13, 2013

Short weeks in the NFL can take a physical toll on a roster, but for a team looking to regroup from a disappointing start, turning the page early comes at the perfect time.

After an offseason of expectation, the Washington Redskins dropped the ball in the Week 1 season opener, both figuratively and at times literally.

No group of people is more keenly aware of that than the players and coaches at Redskins Park.

But those same people are done lamenting lost opportunity and have moved on to focusing on the task at hand in Week 2.

For the Redskins, it is a short week to rebound, which can take its toll physically and mentally.

But for a team ready to move on from the shortcomings of Week 1, the short week comes at the perfect time.

"When you have a short week, normally you get in early, you take a look at the game, both offensively, defensively and special teams. You move on right then," head coach Mike Shanahan told the media. "You don’t have a lot of time because you’re in preparation for the next week."

While speaking to the media on Thursday, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said he and his staff had processed the game and moved on before most people got to work on Tuesday morning.

“We don’t have much time," he said. "We get home late Monday night, we come in real early Tuesday morning, we knock out all those corrections, we meet as a coaching staff and we watch it.

"Usually about eight in the morning we are done with it and then you have to get going on Green Bay because you only have a day to prepare for them where usually you have two days."

Short weeks are always easier to embrace after a victory, as the team did last year with a Sunday victory over Philadelphia before a Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas.

The Redskins will need to recover quickly anyway.

"It has been a bit of a grind this week," Kyle Shanahan said. "My body still felt the pain, it’s still tough after any loss, but you don’t have a choice, you have got to move on; the time is ticking."

Redskins captain London Fletcher made it clear he didn't want to discuss the frustrations of Week 1 with an important conference matchup this Sunday.

"This is Wednesday; I’m thinking about the Packers right now," he said. "You have 24 hours to celebrate or sulk so, in the NFL you can’t dwell too long or celebrate too long because the next game is up on you pretty fast.

"With this being a little bit shorter week, you had one day and then last night I started looking at Green Bay film and started prepping for them.

"I think we’ll be ready to play come Sunday."

When asked why he thought the team would perform differently from a disappointing Week 1, Fletcher responded:

"Because this is professional football, man, and we prepare each and every week.

"What are you trying to ask me? You're still trying to ask me about last week's game and I told you we're on to next week."

Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett was a bit more succinct with the media on Thursday afternoon, after he was asked nine questions about Week 1 before anything in Week 2.

"Are we going to talk about this week's game, or are we going to talk about last week's?" he asked.

While each coach and player admitted there was plenty to be learned from the film in Week 1, no one is panicking or lamenting with 20/20 hindsight.

For this team, the main concern is Sunday and the attitude is full steam ahead.
