Redskins Finalize Preseason Schedule

Posted Apr 19, 2011

The Redskins host preseason games against Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay this year. Preseason road games are at Indianapolis and at Baltimore.

The Redskins finalized their 2011 preseason schedule on Tuesday to coincide with the release of the 2011 regular season schedule.

The Redskins open preseason at FedExField with a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the defending AFC champions. They follow that contest with road trips to take on the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium and the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. They close out preseason with a home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Dates Opponent Time
Fri., Aug. 12 Pittsburgh Steelers 7:30 pm ET
Fri., Aug. 19 @ Indianapolis Colts 7 pm ET
Thurs., Aug. 25 @ Baltimore Ravens 8 pm ET
Thurs., Sept. 1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7:30 pm ET

The Redskins-Ravens game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. The remaining three games will be broadcast locally on NBC-4 and Comcast SportsNet.

At first glance, it appears the Redskins’ preseason schedule is once again a difficult slate of games.

Three of the four opponents (Steelers, Colts, Ravens) were 2010 playoff teams, and the Steelers made it to Super Bowl XLV where they lost to the Green Bay Packers. The Buccaneers did not make the playoffs but finished 10-6.

The Redskins have hosted a preseason game vs. Pittsburgh five times since 2000. The Redskins are 4-1 in those games.

The game against the Colts is the first preseason matchup between the two clubs since the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 3, 2008 in Canton, Ohio. The Redskins defeated the Colts 30-16.

Prior to that contest, the two clubs had not played a preseason contest since the Colts moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984.

The Redskins and Baltimore Colts played regularly in preseason from 1961-81. The two clubs played 18 times in that span with the Colts winning 10 times.

Last year in Week 6 of the regular season, the Redskins lost to the Colts 27-24 at FedExField.

The matchup vs. Baltimore, set for Thursday, Aug. 25, is the sixth time in the last eight years that the Redskins and Ravens have faced off in preseason. The game will be broadcast to a national audience on ESPN.

Last year, the Ravens defeated the Redskins 23-3 in a preseason game at FedExField. Overall, the Ravens lead the preseason series 4-2.

The Redskins close out the 2011 preseason against the Buccaneers at FedExField. It's the first preseason matchup between the two clubs since 2002, when the Redskins handled the Bucs 40-10 at Raymond James Stadium.

Overall, the two franchises have played 10 times in preseason, with the series tied at 5-5.

Last year in Week 14 of the regular season, the Redskins lost to the Buccanners 17-16 at FedExField. As fans may recall, the Redskins lost that game due to a botched snap on a PAT that would have tied the game.
