Redskins-Eagles: Just The Touchdowns

Posted Sep 9, 2013

Despite a sputtering offense through three quarters, the Washington Redskins still managed four touchdowns in a comeback effort that fell short.

Despite a sputtering offense through three quarters, the Washington Redskins still managed four touchdowns in a comeback effort that fell just short.

The Redskins got on the scoreboard tonight with a fumble return for a touchdown, marking the fourth consecutive season in which the Redskins scored a touchdown in the home opener.

It took the Redskins offense nearly 45 minutes to put points on the board, as the team went nearly 30 minutes before Alfred Morris madea a five-yard plunge.

But even with the team rolling on uneven cylinders, they were still very much in the game until the clock hit zero.

Here's a look back at how the Redskins kept themselves in the contest:

1. Hall Played To The Whistle

In training camp, defensive backs coach Raheem Morris has his players practice scooping up balls on the ground and running them back toward the end zone, even in instances where the pass was clearly incomplete.

Veteran cornerback DeAngelo Hall practiced the same principle tonight, scooping up a pass from Eagles quarterback Michael Vick to the flats that had been deflected by outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan.

No Eagles pursued the play, as Hall trotted 75 yards for the touchdown, but no whistles were heard until the officials at the far end of the field signaled the Redskins' first touchdown of the season:

2. Alfred Morris Breaks Through

Tonight was a frustrating start for the Redskins, particularly running back Alfred Morris who fumbled twice in the first quarter.

However hard he and his coaches judge his performance tonight, Morris was also responsible for the offense's first touchdown of the season, punching it in from five yards out at the end of the third quarter:

3. Leonard Hankerson Sets Watch For 'Hank Time'

The Washington Redskins started Pierre Garcon and Joshua Morgan at receiver tonight, getting minimal traction in the passing game until the third quarter.

The key in the final 20 minutes of the game was the emergence of third-year receiver Leonard Hankerson, who caught five passes for 80 yards, including Robert Griffin III's first touchdown pass of the 2013 campaign.

His first of two touchdowns came on 2nd-and-10 from the 10, where No. 10 completed a 10-yard pass to No. 85:

4. Hankerson Makes It Twice As Nice

Coming into tonight's game, Redskins wide receiver Leonard Hankerson had only one 80-yard game and three five-reception games to his record.

He tallied his respective second and fourth such games tonight, carrying the comeback attempt into the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

After catching the first touchdown of the season from Robert Griffin III, Hankerson hauled in No. 2 with 1:20 remaining, a 24-yard strike to bring the game within one score:
