During training camp, Redskins.com will provide an in-depth look at the drafted rookies, both on and off the field. Today's spotlight is on Austin Reiter, a seventh-round pick.

While the quarterback position is always under scrutiny every single play and skill players are judged on their speed and separation, their skillsets will be negated if the center isn’t on a proper cadence with each snap coming out crisp and right into the signal caller’s hands.

For rookie center Austin Reiter, a seventh-round pick taken out of South Florida, repetitions mean everything when it comes to getting everything right.

“I think you just have to go out there and it has to be second nature,” Reiter said. “It can't be something you're thinking about. Snaps and cadence, that comes with time and reps. it’s definitely second nature. It's not something you think about.”

Reiter is competing with Kory Lichtensteiger for the starting center spot all while trying earn a spot on the final 53-man roster.

While it will be difficult to unseat Lichtensteiger from the starting center job, a position he held last season, Reiter’s mindset isn’t that he’s automatically backing up the veteran.

“I think I just have to come out here with the mentality that I want to be the starter,” he said. “I think that's the mentality you have to set forth in order to be that guy someday. You don't go out there and think, ‘Oh I want to be the backup, I want to be the practice squad guy.’ You have to try to be the starter every single day, and eventually that hard work should pay off in the long run, and one day it should happen.”

And with training camp the perfect time to show coaches and teammates why the team used a draft selection on him, Reiter is simply going to try to “be the best player I possibly can be.”

“Trying to set a future goal, I think I have to start with the end in mind here,” he said. “Thinking about what I want to do with this whole career.”

Five W’s And One H:

Who do you look up to?
“My dad. Off the field outside of family members I get a lot of help from David Boss, he's a 9 year veteran with the Giants and the 49ers. He's a guy that lives down the street from me, and I get a lot of help from him.  A lot of off the field questions, stuff that goes on in the meeting rooms he helps me out with.

What was the idea behind your Twitter handle?
“A couple buddies of mine came up with that in college, they used to say ‘Ride or die.’ I asked them one day what my Twitter handle should be and that's what they came up with. Do you guys like that?”

Where would your dream vacation be?
“Well I live in Florida, so some place I would want to go that's different than sunny and tropical would probably be Alaska. That would be cool. Or I would probably go overseas to like China or Japan. Everybody wants to go to warm, tropical weather but that's where I live.”

When did you start playing center?
“Jim Leavitt came to my house when I was a senior in high school, when USF offered me. I really liked him, I believed in everything he told me. He was the first offer I had. He basically convinced me of the position. He said, ‘I don't think you really have the height for tackle,’ because that was what I played in high school, I played defensive line. He said, ‘I could honestly see you playing the best at center.’ I got to USF in January, I was an early graduate from high school. He was there for three days, he signed my paper work in his office, and then he got fired three days later. Then Skip Holtz and that crew came in and said, ‘Yeah, you should get your snaps going.’"

Why South Florida?
“There were a few other offers. I had a lot from the Big East at the time. I had Florida, the depth chart at Florida didn't look very well. Again, Jim Leavitt was the guy. I wasn't even there and I bought into everything the guy had already told me. He kept it straight with me every day, since Day 1 he told me, ‘You're gonna be redshirted.’ Even my high school coach told me, ‘If a coach comes in and tries telling you to go to their school telling you you're going to be the starter when you come in, don't even listen to them.’ He was honest with me and I really appreciated the honesty.”

How do you like the weather in Virginia?
“It's great. It's actually surprisingly humid. It honestly feels a little bit like Florida with the humidity some days.”
