Morris, Griffin III Outduel Bucs' Martin

Posted Sep 30, 2012

Redskins running back Alfred Morris continued the electric start to his NFL career, rushing 21 times for 113 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 24-22 road win in Tampa.

Redskins running back Alfred Morris continued the electric start to his NFL career, rushing 21 times for 113 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 24-22 road win in Tampa.

Morris was a sixth-round selection for the Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft, a talented but unheralded pick out of Florida Atlantic University. Morris grew up in Pensacola, Fla. and saved his finest performance yet for his hometown crowd.

“It was like a welcome home, so I definitely felt good when I came back," he said after the game.  "I knew [the weather] was going to be tough because I got used to playing in Virginia.

"The humidity down here is definitely something else. If you’re not used to it, it could cause lots of problems. I definitely was hydrating before I came down. I was prepared."

Morris entered the game leading all rookie running backs with 263 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Today's performance was the first 100-yard game of his career, and the first by any Redskins player since Evan Royster in Week 17 last season.

He was countered by the Buccaneers' first-round pick Doug Martin, a Boise State Bronco whose stock sky-rocketed during the pre-draft workouts.

Despite his higher draft pedigree, Martin was no match for Morris, who out-gained the young Buc by 80 yards on the ground.

Better yet, Morris found his way to the end zone for the fourth time as a member of the Redskins, joining Robert Griffin III at the top of the NFL standings for rushing touchdowns.

The pair are the first rookie teammates in NFL history to each have four rushing touchdowns in their first four games.

Griffin III's came on a designed draw up the middle from the 10-yard line.  Griffin III added a critical 15-yard run on the game-winning drive, setting the Redskins up in field goal range.

He had seven rushes for 43 yards on the day.  At his current pace of production through four games, Griffin III is on pace for 1,008 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in his rookie campaign.

Morris's fourth touchdown came on a 39-yard burst up the middle, where he cut behind his blockers and crossed the goal-line untouched.  This was a career-long for Morris and the longest rush for the Redskins this season.
