It’s Redskins Vs. Media In 2014 Big Train Softball Classic

Posted Mar 29, 2014

Chris Cooley will be looking to lead the media team to its first-ever victory in the third-annual Big Train Celebrity Softball Classic, which is being held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Shirley Povich Field (10600 Westlake Drive, Bethesda, Md., 20852) in Cabin John Regional Park.

Chris Cooley has been there, done that with a successful career as a tight end in the National Football League, so now he wants to help out those in his new career field.

Cooley will be looking to lead the media team to its first-ever victory in the third-annual Big Train Celebrity Softball Classic, which is being held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Shirley Povich Field (10600 Westlake Drive, Bethesda, Md., 20852) in Cabin John Regional Park.

Cooley — now an analyst for ESPN 980 — will be player-manager for the media team, which is competing against a formidable squad consisting of several current and former Redskins stars, as well as a few other professional athletes.

Forming the Athlete roster are current Redskins Ryan Kerrigan, Kai Forbath, Nick Sundberg, Perry Riley Jr., Niles Paul and Kedric Golston. Former Redskins players on the team are Lorenzo Alexander, Antwaan Randle El and Chris Wilson. Other athletes on the squad include former University of Maryland Terrapin basketball standouts Juan Dixon and Byron Mouton, as well as Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Washington Spirit.

Representing the media team — which lost 10-3 in 2012 and 3-2 in last year’s Big Train Celebrity Softball Classic — are: Cooley and Chuck Sapienza (ESPN 980); former Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot, Grant Paulsen and Kevin Shafer (each of 106.7 The Fan); Mike Wise (Washington Post); Chick Hernandez and Julie Donaldson (Comcast SportsNet); Steve Chenevey and Lindsay Murphy (FOX5); Kristen Berset (CBS9); Dianna Russini (NBC4); Chris Styles (WPGC 95.5); Adam Bradley (Ball Hogs Radio); and Andrew Walker (Redskins.com).

The event’s FanFest begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes fun for the whole family, including rides and games, a Redskins-themed auction and free food to the first 500 people in attendance.

Tickets to the game cost only $10 and can be purchased by clicking here. Proceeds from the game benefit four very worthy organizations:

  • The host Bethesda Big Train’s foundation to improve and build baseball fields in nearby communities to provide local children with better places to play;
  • The ACES Foundation — founded by former Redskins Pro Bowl linebacker and special teams ace Lorenzo Alexander — which supports youth through emphasizing self accountability, taking pride in their community and striving for educational excellence while promoting a healthy mind and body through sports;
  • The Brave Dave Open, an annual golfing event which, for more than a decade, has been a leading contributor to cure all auto-immune diseases; and
  • The Washington Redskins Alumni Association.
