Hurt Gives Teammates A Lift In Spot Start

Posted Dec 26, 2012

Redskins OG Maurice Hurt has played a limited role this season, but earned a spot start in place of Tyler Polumbus at tackle--a position he doesn't naturally play.

With right tackle Tyler Polumbus out of the lineup last Sunday in Philadelphia, the starting offensive line changed for the first time in 15 games this season.

With Jordan Black suspended for the remainder of the season and Tom Compton recently promoted from the practice squad, the Redskins turned to second-year offensive lineman Maurice Hurt for the spot start.

Hunt was a 2011 seventh-round draft pick that earned eight starts in 11 appearances at left guard in his rookie year. After the team shored up the depth of the offensive line this past offseason, Hurt became a swing tackle, taking snaps at each position along the offensive line.

Sunday was his first start of the year at any position, and he helped pave the way for the team’s sixth-consecutive victory.

“It feels great just to be out there with the guys and being able to compete,” Hurt said. “I’m glad to help in any way I can.”

Hurt played left tackle at times during the preseason, but saw his first NFL regular season action at the tackle position. All-in-all, things went well.

“I was very comfortable,” Hurt said. “I took some reps at tackle through the last couple of weeks at practice. I played there in college and in the preseason the last couple of years. I’ve moved around a lot.”

Versatility is a hard skill to maintain at the game’s highest level, but it is a challenge that Hurt embraced with the season on the line.

“It’s fun; just being able to be out there and do both positions,” he said. “Being able to play in space and in the box is fun. The guys around me are helping me a lot and I try to be as versatile as I can.”

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III returned to the starting lineup on Sunday, after missing the Browns game with a sprained lateral collateral ligament (LCL).

Griffin III spoke highly of Hurt’s contributions, not only during the Eagles game, but his work throughout the season.

“He stepped up big,” he said of Hurt. “He’s been working his butt off all season waiting for his chance and he got his chance to start and he played big for us. It was good to see him.”
