Griffin III's Status To Be Announced Sunday

Posted Dec 15, 2012

The Redskins starting quarterback situation for Sunday's game will not be resolved until game time according to head coach Mike Shanahan.

The Redskins starting quarterback situation for Sunday's game will not be resolved until game time according to head coach Mike Shanahan.

Asked if he had a gut feeling about whether Robert Griffin III (Grade 1 LCL sprain) would be available, Shanahan responded, "No, not really.

"We’ll get a chance to evaluate him [on Saturday] and talk to the doctors."

Shanahan has been coy with his game plan heading into Sunday, not wanting to rush Griffin III's recovery or surrender a competitive advantage to the Browns.

Griffin III practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday through Friday and is currently listed as questionable for Sunday.

While Shanahan resisted giving percentages of practice repetitions, he did say that Griffin III looked better each day.

"He keeps on improving every day," he said. "He looked much better [on Friday]."

Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron told the Cleveland media this week that the team is preparing for Griffin III to be operating at full speed by kickoff.

"We fully anticipate that he'll play," he said. "We're preparing for RG3, to be out there.''

"While you're preparing, your preparing for both [Griffin III and Cousins]. I would think whoever's in at quarterback, they'd still run some of the stuff they run with RG3, the read option stuff."

If Griffin III is unable to go, rookie backup Kirk Cousins will step in, with veteran backup Rex Grossman a possibility as his second-string.

Shanahan credited Cousins's poise throughout the week, say that he was comfortable with him under center in the event that Griffin III was held out.

“[Cousins had a] good week," Shanahan said. "He’s been pretty consistent all the way through [since training] camp, all the way through all the games we’ve prepared for this season."

Shanahan said he expects Cousins to be comfortable with the game plan, regardless of whether he starts or comes on in relief.

"He’s got to be prepared to go either way," Shanahan said. "Anytime you get reps, a quarterback has always got to be ready to go. Especially in a situation like this, you have to be prepared mentally to go.”

"I can’t tell you when, but we will know before the game if he’s playing or starting."
