Griffin Activated, Lichtensteiger Uncertain

Posted Jan 4, 2013

Redskins HC Mike Shanahan announced that CB Cedric Griffin was activated from suspension, while CB DJ Johnson (knee) was placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan announced today that cornerback Cedric Griffin has been activated to the 53-man roster after serving a four-game suspension by the NFL.

Griffin has practiced with the team since Wednesday, but Shanahan wanted to test his conditioning level before activating him for the playoffs.

By Friday afternoon, Shanahan was convinced Griffin could make an impact on Sunday.

"I hope so," Shanahan said. "That's why we got him up."

Griffin joins a secondary that performed well in his absence, as rookie Richard Crawford has filled in at nickel cornerback and punt returner.

To make room for Griffin, the Redskins are placing cornerback Domonique 'D.J.' Johnson on injured reserve for a knee injury sustained in last week's victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Fellow defensive back DeJon Gomes practiced in a limited fashion and is questionable for Sunday. Gomes was a gametime inactivation last week, and has not practiced fully since injuring his knee against Philadelphia.

Shanahan also noted that starting left guard Kory Lichtensteiger (ankle) did not practice for the third consecutive day and would be a gametime decision.

"We'll test him out before the game and do what we think gives us the best chance to win," Shanahan said. "Very similar to [left tackle] Trent Williams [earlier this season]. Trent didn't practice during the week either."

If Lichtensteiger is unable to play, he would be replaced by rookie guard Josh LeRibeus, who filled in after injury last week.

"[LeRibeus] got all the reps, so he got some repetition during the week," Shanahan explained. "A lot of times, guys will go out early and somebody is forced to play that hasn't had the repetition.

"LeRibeus got the reps this week and Kory's got the experience, so we'll see how it is before the game."
