Garçon Unimpressed With Stellar Stat Line

Posted Nov 11, 2013

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garçon had a career week with 14 catches for 291 yards and a touchdown in two games, but took the accolades with humility in the face of a loss.

On Thursday evening, Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garçon recorded seven receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown.

It capped off a monster week for the receiver, who tallied seven receptions and a career-high 172 yards just four days before, finishing the week with 14 receptions for 291 yards and a score.

It was the first time Garçon surpassed 100 receiving yards in consecutive games as a member of the Redskins, and his first since Weeks 4-5 of the 2011 season as a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

His 61 receptions on the season rank fourth in the NFL. But none of these personal numbers were as important as his impact on the team.

Behind his steady production, the Redskins posted 433 yards of total offense, giving them 933 yards of total offense in the last two weeks, the team’s best two-week output since 2006.

One of the longest plays in that stretch was a designed screen to Garçon, who followed his blockers down the sideline, breaking tackles and picking up 32 yards.

After the game, he praised his blockers for opening the hole for him at the line of scrimmage and getting him to the second level unscathed.

“The guys are blocking for me and I just ran hard and found a hole to stick my head in,” he told ESPN 980 on Friday. “I appreciate that those guys are definitely working hard for me, and I’m just showing them the same thing by trying to run as hard as I can on any play.

“I’m trying to do my job, just trying to make the most of it.”

Garçon’s top priority is getting open for quarterback Robert Griffin III, who has thrown only one interception in the last two weeks.

Griffin III singled out his top receiver for praise after the team’s Week 9 win over the San Diego Chargers.

“The receivers were where they needed to be and they made the big time catches. Pierre [Garçon] bailed me out a couple times on a couple throws,” he said. “There were other times I had to be on the money and they made the plays.”

Another part of his job is to open up holes in the running game, which has come alive, averaging 187.4 yards per game since the bye after averaging 106 yards per game before.

With his thirst for physicality and a little revenge on defenders, Garçon embraces run blocking much more than your average No. 1 receiver.

“Coach Shanahan, both Mike and Kyle, both preach run blocking, and that definitely opens up holes in the passing game,” he said on a recent Facebook chat with FedEx. “If you do well on run blocking that increases the chances of balls being thrown to us.

“It definitely opens up the offense for us and it’s a little payback to the DBs that tackle us and try to guard us when we’re running routes.”

Despite the resurgent offense, the team is still struggling to win games, sitting at 3-6 without back-to-back wins this season.

The key for Garçon and the offense to turn the season around in the last seven games is going to be finding consistency and the fire that fueled them to success last season. Everyone is accountable.

“We have to do a lot of things better. We need to complete the tough plays, convert more on third down and just keep working at it,” he said. “We need to continue to stick to our guns and stick to working hard on different looks and completing passes when things aren’t perfect.”
