Garçon: 'Our Backs Are Against The Wall'

Posted Sep 25, 2013

Staring down the possibility of a 0-4 start to a promising season, the Washington Redskins is focused on improving in practice and producing on gameday.

After three weeks of the regular season, the Redskins have yet to find the right combination of offense, defense and special teams to produce a victory on Sunday.

Winless, the Redskins are facing an unexpected gut-check, as the team soul-searches in a quest to figure out what it will take to get the first win of the season.

Staring down the possibility of a 0-4 start to a promising season, Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garçon said the team must stick together and focus on getting better in practice.

“We know where we are at, our backs are against the wall. We are not doing anything wrong that stands out we just have to keep working hard,” he said. “Eventually, we will overcome this.”

The Redskins sputtering offense has had plenty of opportunities to score this season, but too many drives have been cut short by penalties and turnovers.

“We are definitely shooting ourselves in the foot. We’ll see it on tape, fix it and get that squared away,” Garçon said. “We have to keep battling.

“This is the NFL, not everything is going to be perfect. We can’t get down on ourselves just because we are losing, we have to practice and continue to work hard.”

Quarterback Robert Griffin III echoed his sentiments, hinting that the team was starting to adopt an ‘us against the world’ mentality.

“Nobody in this league is going to feel sorry for us sitting at 0-3. No one wants to be 0-3,” he said after Sunday’s loss. “We play this game to win. We don't play this game to get moral victories and say we did better. You play the game to win and we didn't win.

“Every time you suit up on that field, you've got to be ready to play. Everybody in this league is good. If they're going to point their finger, just point it up and keep your head up. Keep your head up and fight on.”

The team’s offense made progress in Week 3, scoring in the first half for the first time all season and keeping the game competitive until the final minutes.

Not good enough, says Garçon.

“We are getting off to a faster start and we are starting to make plays,” Garçon said. “But we’re not passing the ball well, we’re not catching the ball well and we’re not running the ball well. It’s the whole scheme, it’s not one person, one player or one thing.

“We have to convert on the hard plays. That’s the thing that keeps you in this league. You have to convert on the tough plays not the easy plays. When its short yardage you have to get those tough yards.”

From an offensive standpoint the Redskins are getting better week to week. The one constant that is bogging down the offense is turnovers.

If the Redskins can cut down on turnovers and start fast like they did against Detroit, this team believes they can bounce back from the 0-3 start.

Garcon knows what the offense is capable of and made it clear that the team will continue to battle through the early struggles.

“We are going to run the ball, throw the ball and continue to make plays,” he said. “We’re not going to give up, we are going to keep battling and find out what’s wrong.

“We’re going to keep working at it. It’s nothing we can’t fix.”
