Cundiff Scores A Dozen In Redskins Debut

Posted Aug 29, 2012

Redskins kicker Billy Cundiff was thrown directly into the fray tonight, scoring 12 in his Redskins debut after being cut by the Ravens on Monday.

The last two days have been a whirlwind for Billy Cundiff.

On Tuesday, he was signed by the Redskins as the team’s new kicker. By Wednesday, he was already taking part in his first game, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedExField.

Three made field goals, three extra points, five forced touchbacks and a 30-3 win later, and Cundiff’s first game can be chalked up as a success.

“I've only been here for two days now, so everything's been just trying to get used to the pregame routine and so on,” Cundiff said. “I'm trying to get used to this stadium and this new environment and everything that goes along with this job.”

Cundiff said he was able to establish a good rapport with long snapper Nick Sundberg and holder/punter Sav Rocca in Tuesday’s practice and before Wednesday’s game.

The end result was three made field goals – from 39, 27 and 22 yards, respectively.

Cundiff, a former All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection with the Baltimore Ravens, also missed a 46-yard field goal in Wednesday’s game, but said he knows exactly what went wrong on that kick.

“The miss, I just wasn't as aggressive as I should've been,” Cundiff admitted. “Those are things that you work through as we kind of get our timing down, and those are problems that we can clear up and what the preseason's for.”

Cundiff said the last two days have been “interesting” as he’s tried to get adjusted to a new team and also tried to move his family down south from Maryland.

“Having to talk to my wife, last night while I'm trying to get my mind right to play, we're talking about moving our family and getting the kids ready,” Cundiff said. “Life changes really quick -- you've got to be able to adapt.”

Most importantly, the 32-year-old Drake University product said he’s just happy to be on a team where his services are needed.

“It's just exciting to be here and to be in a place that wants us to be here and have a chance to be successful,” Cundiff said.
