Cousins, Redskins Sweep Weekly Awards

Posted Dec 21, 2012

Redskins QB Kirk Cousins joins teammates Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris as winners of the NFL Rookie of the Week awards this year, in addition to a consecutive victory for 'Never Say Never' Moment of the Week.

Redskins fans continue to stack the NFL fan votes in favor of the burgundy and gold, as the team and quarterback Kirk Cousins sweep the awards for a second-consecutive week.

The NFL announced this afternoon that Cousins is the winner of the NFL Rookie of the Week award for last Sunday's 38-21 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Cousins completed 26-of-37 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns, throwing for the most yards by a Redskins rookie since the NFL strike games in 1987.

The Redskins have now won five consecutive Rookie of the Week honors, covering the team's five-game winning streak.

The team has won nine total awards this season, as Cousins joins running back Alfred Morris (two) and quarterback Robert Griffin III (six).

The victory over the Browns combined with a loss by the New York Giants propelled the Redskins into a share of first place in the NFC East.

With tie breakers, the Redskins are currently in track to win the division, with victories over the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys in the ginal two games.

This is the latest that the team has had a share of first place in the division since 1999.  It also earned Cousins and the Redskins a victory in the NFL's Week 15 'Never Say Never' Moment of the Week.

Counted out following a 3-6 start, the Washington Redskins have surged into a tie for first place in the NFC East following a fifth consecutive win. This triumph came with Griffin III inactive and fellow rookie Cousins making his first career NFL start.

The Cleveland Browns were riding a three-game winning streak entering Sunday. Cousins overcame an early interception to throw for 329 yards and two touchdowns as the Redskins won, 38-21.

This is the second-consecutive victory of the 'Never Say Never' Moment of the Week, following their award for the Week 14 comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens in overtime.
