Breast Cancer Awareness Month Kicks Off!

Posted Oct 10, 2013

Washington Redskins fans will rock burgundy, gold and pink at the Oct. 20 Breast Cancer Awareness game against the Chicago Bears at FedExField as part of a month-long awareness campaign.

The Washington Redskins are embarking upon several initiatives in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at both FedExField and Redskins Park throughout October.

Mrs. Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder and NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Spokesperson, and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, will kick off the team’s breast cancer awareness efforts by hosting the sixth annual All-Star Survivors Celebration at Redskins Park on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The All-Star Survivors Celebration will pamper, support and celebrate 20 area women currently battling breast cancer.

The breast cancer survivors, or “All-Stars,” will receive new jeans donated by Gap Inc., as well as new wigs, scarves, makeup and a custom-made Redskins jersey.

The All-Stars will also receive pink New Era caps, which they will wear on-field during player introductions at the Redskins’ breast cancer awareness game on Sunday, Oct. 20 against the Chicago Bears. The game will feature:

  • Game balls with pink ribbon decals and pink kicking tees
  • Pink equipment for players including: cleats, wristbands, gloves, sideline caps, helmet decals, captains’ patches, chin straps, shoe laces, skull caps, sideline towels, eye shield decals and quarterback towels
  • Pink coins used for the coin toss
  • Pink sideline caps for coaches and sideline personnel as well as pink ribbon pins for coaches and team executives
  • Special caps, pink wristbands, whistles and pins for game officials
  • On-field pink ribbon stencils and A Crucial Catch wall banners
  • Pink goal post padding in end zones
  • Breast cancer awareness pompoms, shirts and wristbands for cheerleaders

Fans attending the Oct. 20 game will be welcomed by Mrs. Snyder, CareFirst and hundreds of Zeta Tau Alpha members distributing THINK-PINK!® ribbons and breast cancer awareness educational materials.

In honor of the five millionth pink ribbon being distributed this year, the Redskins and ZTA will create a human pink ribbon on the field throughout pre-game festivities and the National Anthem.

Mrs. Snyder and ZTA started the THINK-PINK!® campaign for breast cancer awareness in 1999. At the time, the Redskins were the only team in the league to participate.

With the founding and continuous support of Mrs. Snyder and the Washington Redskins, ZTA created a national model for THINK-PINK!® throughout the NFL. Currently, 28 of the 32 teams in the NFL participate in the campaign.

The Redskins will also participate in and support the following ongoing initiatives throughout the month of October:

  • The Redskins will “pink out” the team’s digital and social media platforms.
  • Inova Blood Donor Services will host the Bleed Pink Blood Drive on Oct. 12 at FedExField in support of breast cancer awareness. Fans who participate will receive a Bleed Pink t-shirt and a chance to win tickets to an upcoming Redskins game.
  • Women of Washington Redskins (WOW), the official women’s club of the Washington Redskins, will feature an interactive map on WOWredskins.com to promote breast cancer education and the importance of early detection by helping women find the breast cancer screening center closest to them.
  • WOW will donate $1 to the American Cancer society on behalf of each new member who joins the club throughout October. Toyota, the presenting partner of WOW, will match this donation at the end of the month to benefit breast cancer research and outreach programs.

Toyota will donate $50 to the American Cancer Society for every catch made by the Redskins this season to encourage fans to make the “Crucial Catch” and get screened annually.
