Biggers At Home In Redskins Secondary

Posted May 22, 2013

Washington Redskins CB E.J. Biggers may be a new face in the secondary but says he already feels at home with his coaches, teammates and the new 3-4 system.

Coming into the Washington Redskins’ 2013 OTAs, the biggest roster storyline to watch is the development of the competition among defensive backs.

After a season of question marks in the secondary, the Redskins front office made sure to add quality depth to the safety and cornerback positions, including former Tampa Bay Buccaneer corner E.J. Biggers.

The Redskins went out and signed free agent Biggers in March, and have since drafted cornerback David Amerson and safeties Phillip Thomas and Bacarri Rambo to add to the mix.

In addition, the Skins signed starter DeAngelo Hall to a reported one-year deal after releasing him for salary cap relief.

With the added incentive of competing for a starting job, Biggers feels like his defensive unit  is one that he is proud to be a part of.

“We have a great room full of talent, a great team. It’s a pleasure and an honor to play with guys like DeAngelo [Hall] and Josh Wilson,” he said. “It’s a great room to be around. It makes you want to compete and be your very best at all times.”

Biggers is also reunited with Redskins’ defensive backs coach Raheem Morris, who was Biggers’ head coach for three seasons in Tampa Bay.

“Coach Morris is amazing. The kind of guy he is. The kind of coach he is. He challenges you to bring out your very best. That’s every day,” he said. “Walking around the hallway, in meetings, all that. Just to know he wants you to bring your best at all times makes me want to work harder each day.”

Biggers may only be 25, but he plays like a veteran and still has the athleticism and speed that made him a sub-4.4 40 yard dasher at the NFL Combine.

Although Biggers played primarily man coverage in the ‘Tampa 2’ defensive scheme with the Bucs, he will have to adapt to more zone coverage in defensive coordinator Jim Haslett’s 3-4.

This is something his coaches believe will come naturally him. When asked who is helping to make his transition to Washington easier, Biggers had a hard time picking just one.

“Everyone is, really. It’s a great locker room. From day one, everyone made me feel so welcome,” he said. “I felt like I have been here forever. Like I said, those guys are such a positive influence here. They are like big brothers to you.

“I’ve been watching them and always been a fan of the older guys. They are guys you want to learn from and be with out there.”
