Beamer Calling All Hokie Fans To FedExField

Posted Sep 26, 2012

Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer catches up with Redskins Nation host Larry Michael before Saturday's game vs. Cincinnati at FedExField.

Fewer than three days remain before the kickoff of college football at FedExField, as the Virginia Tech Hokies (3-1) host the Cincinnati Bearcats (2-0) in the second installment of the Virginia 529 College Savings Classic.

Hokies head coach Frank Beamer has spent a quarter of a century in Blacksburg and has played at FedExField on multiple occasions.

Whether he leads the home team, as he will this Saturday at 3:30 p.m., or the away team as he did against Boise State in 2010, he knows he has the crowd backing at FedExField.

“It’s a great stadium and people there treat us great,” he said.  “When we get up there we always have a lot of people there. I’m very hopeful that it can seem like a home game for Virginia Tech.”

“We look forward to getting back there and hope all of the people in northern Virginia and Maryland will turn out and help us win this football game.”

Virginia Tech enters the contest with one blemish through four games, a 35-17 loss to Pittsburgh on the road.  One week prior, the Pittsburgh Panthers were walloped by the Bearcats 34-10.

Beamer was blunt in his assessment of the Hokies-Panthers matchup, saying, “The bottom line is that they pounded Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh pounded us.  Those are the facts early this season.”

In an odd scheduling anomaly, the Hokies have played twice as many games as the Bearcats, who have had the two weeks since the Pittsburgh victory to prepare.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech was able to get back on track with a 37-0 trouncing of Bowling Green.

“Two weeks well-rested and they had the extra time to game plan,” Beamer said.  “They’re a good football team. They really are athletic and a quality football team.”

After Saturday’s game, the Hokies enter the in-conference portion of the schedule, leaving Saturday as the final game before the ACC matchups begin.  Beamer looks at this game as another opportunity for a young team to develop together.

“I think we need to continue to make progress,” he said.  “I thought we took a step forward last week and we’ve gotten better as a football team.

“We’re going to have to take another step this week to hang in there with this Cincinnati football team.”

Kickoff for Saturday's game has been set at 3:30 p.m.  Tickets are still available, so please vist TICKETMASTER.com/FedExField, or call 301-276-6711 for suites and large groups.  For more information on the game, please click here.
