Barry Cofield Added Back To Active Roster

Posted Nov 11, 2014

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have activated nose tackle Barry Cofield to the active roster from the team’s Reserved/Injured (designated to return) list.

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have activated nose tackle Barry Cofield to the active roster from the team’s Reserved/Injured (designated to return) list.

In a corresponding move, the team waived linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat.

Cofield was placed on the short-term IR list Sept. 9 after suffering a high ankle sprain in the team’s Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans.

He returned to the practice field three weeks ago, and will be available for head coach Jay Gruden and the Redskins on Sunday, when they play host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedExField.

“He just adds more depth,” Gruden said of Cofield. “He’s obviously a good player. We think a lot of him, and in his absence guys have stepped up and done some good things. But it to add another big body to the mix, as far as rotations are concerned, it can’t hurt, especially one with his ability.”

Cofield, Jr. (6-4, 303) returns after having previously started all 49 regular season games and one postseason game in which he has played since joining the Redskins as an unrestricted free agent on July 29, 2011.

The ninth-year NFL veteran has recorded 94 tackles (48 solo), 8.0 sacks, 15 passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumbles recovered as a member of the Redskins.

In his absence, Chris Baker has slid over from defensive end to start at nose tackle, while Jarvis Jenkins took over at Baker’s spot at defensive end.

Gruden said he was immediately unsure if Cofield will retain his starting position at nose tackle on Sunday.

Jeffcoat (6-3, 253), meanwhile, signed to the Redskins’ practice squad on Sept. 2, 2014 and was activated to the 53-man roster on Oct. 7.

He appeared in one game, making his NFL debut in a Week 7 win vs. Tennessee.
