Would Jim Zorn consider using the Wildcat formation?

“No.”

The question often is asked of Zorn, considering the popularity of the Wildcat. The Philadelphia Eagles, this Monday’s opponent, have used the formation with quarterback Michael Vick.

The Redskins have Antwaan Randle El, a versatile player in his own right. He was a college quarterback at Indiana and developed his skills as a wide receiver and punt returner in the NFL.

“I have thought of Antwaan there, and I could use him off the edge with an option pass,” Zorn said. “I have chosen not to do that because I don’t want to spend a lot of time on it. It takes time to develop that.”

Randle El’s health and durability are a significant factor, Zorn added.

“I didn’t want to put him in that situation where he could get banged up,” Zorn said. “He’s not a rugged running back, and some of the Wildcat is option where you pitch or come off the edge. You can get lit up.

“I need him out of that wide receiver position. I need him in that punt return position. He gets hammered enough returning punts. I just don’t want him taking unusual hits.”

Zorn discussed the Wildcat formation during his weekly appearance on “The Jim Zorn Show,” which airs on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC-WRC 4. The show is hosted by Den Hellie and Larry Weisman.

During the show, Zorn also answered a fan question about Albert Haynesworth’s effectiveness and durability.

“I think he has been as good as advertised,” Zorn replied. “He has really penetrated into the offense’s backfield. He has strained for every inch of real estate he can get.

“When he goes all-out, his mode of operation is to take a breather. Some of it is painful for him. He comes out, gets rested up, and gets right back in there.

“When you’re trying to move a 340-pound offensive lineman as hard as he does and as fast as he does, you exert a lot of energy. I want him fresh every time he is out there.”

This week’s edition of “The Jim Zorn Show” also includes a Redskins Legacy segments on Hall of Famer Bill Dudley and a chalk talk session on the zone blitz.
