The Redskins have waived punter Ryan Plackemeier, the team announced on Thursday.

Plackemeier joined the Redskins midseason last year and played in 10 games, with 55 punts for a 41.7-yard average.

Among kickers with 20 or more punts last season, Plackemeier was ranked 31st in the league.

Plackemeier shined in the Redskins’ 10-3 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 21. In the fourth quarter, he pinned the Eagles inside their own 20-yard line five times.

At the end of last season, head coach Jim Zorn was complimentary of Plackemeier--the two were together in Seattle in 2006-07. So it’s possible that Plackemeier could be re-signed at some point.

The Redskins currently have one punter on the roster: first-year player Zac Atterberry, signed as a free agent in January.

Atterberry spent time with the Chicago Bears as a rookie last year. He played college football at Lindenwood University in Missouri.

In the 2008 NFL Draft, the Redskins selected Durant Brooks in the sixth round. Brooks beat out veteran Derrick Frost in a preseason competition, but struggled in six regular season games and was released.
